Description Barn Owl (Tyto alba pratincola) head at different angles. Males of this subspecies typically have the lighter or pure white faces while females tend to have slightly darker coloration, especially around the eyes, but there is large overlap between the sexes; the model for this ref falls in the "between" coloration. The lower row of babies and the juvenile barn owl 4 across on the top row were all brought into the rehabilitation center for various reasons and successfully released. The remainder of the pictures are of the same female, a bird that was kept illegally as a pet, imprinted, and fed an improper diet. She suffered from metabolic bone disease and had multiple fractures in her wings by the time she was finally confiscated and turned over to the rehab center. Since she could not be released, she became an educational presentation bird.

Okay, just making sure. I'm not the most savvy with these terms.
Almost thought it meant something along the lines of photo-editing and touchups.

Ciameth In reply to springheel [2010-11-03 15:16:31 +0000 UTC]

No peregrines, but I will eventually be doing one for a smaller falcon, the American Kestrel.

Bah I wish someone would do something like this on a Resplendent Quetzal. I can't find any head angles but side on google, and I can't find good hatchling or fledgling pics at all. Its why I haven't done my challenges yet ^^'. But such beautiful pictures of such a beautiful creature! ^^

No prob I made the first one for myself, and then realized a bunch of other people found it useful. Plus I've been having a lot of fun preparing the raptor foot ref.

This will be very useful.

She is a fair bit darker and spottier than the local barn owls here (subsp. delicatula), not that I get to see them that often.

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating, but this is still an invaluable reference!

She's a gorgeous owl! Her story is so sad, poor girl!

Their heads/necks are difficult for me to draw because the feathers don't really lay flat on that part of the body the way most other bird's do; a hawk is so much easier because you can envision the how the body beneath the feathers looks. Barn owls have a scrawny little neck and vulture-like head underneath what is essentially a floofy tube-sock of feathers (or at least that is how I always end up thinking about it) and an exaggerated disk of really lacy feathers. On the baby five over with the facial disk just coming in, you can see what direction all the feathers will eventually point. I love your barn owl Windsonde character, btw! Hope to see more of her!

Oh man, isn't that the truth (That's a great way of thinking about it I think!) XD I remember when I was much younger, going to a talk on raptors and being shocked all to pieces when the handler said that the large, wise-looking head on owls was a bit of a misnomer, and then proceded to demonstrate that it was mostly feather-floof by gently sticking her finger into it, to show how deep the feathers were.

I love all of the little baby pictures too by the way... they're so adorably awkward looking when they're little XD

And gosh, thank you! <:} Hopefully we'll see more of Kiya too? (She's so darn pretty!)
