Description Raptor/hawk head at different angles. These are all the same Red-tailed Hawk, but he molted from juvenile to adult plumage while I was collecting these pictures so there is color variation to the feathers; the lighting also changed day-to-day. This bird is not a falconry bird, but rather a permanent resident at a raptor rehabilitation center. He came in from the wild with a badly-healed coracoid break and cannot fly very well. His upper beak is over-long, so keep that in mind if you're trying to draw a realistic, natural raptor. I hope this makes a decent reference for people drawing birds of prey, gryphons, etc. Feel free to download for personal use. Not for photo-manipulation. If anyone is interested in a similar thing with owls, kestrels, another species of hawk, raptor feet, etc let me know.

10/26: Wow, the daily deviation was a surprise! I'm glad this is turning out useful for so many people. My gallery has a lot of other bird of prey photos that I usually allow people to use for reference if they ask first and credit back to the original, so feel free to take a look.

You can download it and do whatever you like with it, so long as it isn't re-uploaded anywhere.

He was really underweight and dehydrated when he came in. I'm impressed he managed to keep himself alive long enough for someone to find him too. Probably scavenged.

But he's happy now; food and a place to stay.

He LOVES the food! He used to share a flight cage with a pair of Swainson's Hawks, but he ate more than his share so he has to live by himself now

Oh and congrats on the DD!!

It was already said before but a wing reference would help a lot. it's easy to find "standard" angles but for the rest...it's hard to reference from videos, so if you made one - it would be awesome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ciameth In reply to Langepon [2010-10-26 16:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Since most of the birds I work with are incapable of normal flight, a wing reference would be hard. I recommend looking to these great bird photographers on DA, who have amazing birds-in-flight pictures and much nicer cameras. According to her FAQ, allows people to use her work as reference. has some of the best shots of raptors in flight, but I'm not sure if he allows use for reference. Make sure to ask him before sketching from any of his photos. also has an impressive collection of raptors in flight, but again, I'm not sure if he allows use for reference so you'll have to ask.

Wow, these are great! I'm glad you'll be doing one for feet too ^.^ I think I also read you were going to do vulture references as well? That'll be a great addition to the stock gallery, much needed! Owls sound awesome as well! I wonder if you could get sleeping references...I assume they'd wake up as you walked in, but hey, it's worth a try. You are so lucky to be able to be so close to these birds, and it's great that you're willing to share it with artists Yay stockers!

I do work with one bird--a Swainson's Hawk--tame/lazy enough to frequently go to sleep on the glove, so I can take a few shots of his sleeping poses.

I like the ones where he's looking up too. And #4, where he's about to cast a pellet of chick feathers, is one of my favorites. #6 in the second row where he's doing that Red-tail scream is the only time I've ever heard him make a noise (a wild hawk was swooping a little too close to us) and since I managed to catch him making that face, that's another one of my favorites.

I'll be doing one for feet. With access to university specimens, it's easy to get some "unique" angles of feet--like how eagle feet look coming right at the lens--but I'll try to make at least half of the foot references from live birds to show the actual color and the natural poses they stand, grasp, etc in.

You're welcome! I was looking for the same thing myself (Thanks to Windsonde, I am addicted to drawing gryphons). When I couldn't find what I wanted, I decided just to get the very obliging Diego to help me fill out the angles I didn't already have pictures of by modeling. He was such a good boy about it
