Description
Raptor/hawk head at different angles. These are all the same Red-tailed Hawk, but he molted from juvenile to adult plumage while I was collecting these pictures so there is color variation to the feathers; the lighting also changed day-to-day. This bird is not a falconry bird, but rather a permanent resident at a raptor rehabilitation center. He came in from the wild with a badly-healed coracoid break and cannot fly very well. His upper beak is over-long, so keep that in mind if you're trying to draw a realistic, natural raptor. I hope this makes a decent reference for people drawing birds of prey, gryphons, etc. Feel free to download for personal use. Not for photo-manipulation. If anyone is interested in a similar thing with owls, kestrels, another species of hawk, raptor feet, etc let me know.Great-horned Owl: [link]

10/26: Wow, the daily deviation was a surprise! I'm glad this is turning out useful for so many people. My gallery has a lot of other bird of prey photos that I usually allow people to use for reference if they ask first and credit back to the original, so feel free to take a look.

What a gorgeous hawk! It's hard to find such great closeup photos as it is, so this is really great!!
If you could do one for owls -maybe just owl feet- that would be beyond awesome!

I think I'll get an owl one done next--not sure whether great-horned or burrowing--and for feet I might put different species together because I think the differences between osprey, eagle, red tail, swainsons, harrier, kite, peregrine, kestel, new world vulture etc are really cool. You can tell species apart with just feet!

Beautiful, but man does he ever need his beak coped in most of these!

Ciameth In reply to lyosha [2010-10-25 16:47:58 +0000 UTC]
It's a bit exasperating for him too, since he's not fond of coping either . At least he isn't as difficult to deal with as the one RTHA with the disfigured beak we have at the center. I feel sorry for that bird, because apart from his face he's gorgeous and in great condition--very large for a male too. But when he was brought in, his strange beak was so twisted and overgrown that he couldn't open it at all.

Poor dude! He's a cutie, regardless! I love redtails so much. We have one with a bit of a twisted beak as well, and coping can be a real challenge.

Ciameth In reply to lyosha [2010-10-25 15:30:53 +0000 UTC]
I know! He gets his beak coped frequently, but it grows very fast and, unfortunately, more so on one side than the other which gets to be a real problem if a month goes by without coping.

Personally, I think he's a bit goofy-looking . The other Red-tails at the center are all much more dignified. One of his female predecessors was positively regal. She always looked like a queen, her feathers were gorgeous and glossy rich colors, and her eyes were so dark they were almost black. I don't have enough pictures of her.

Perhaps if I spent more time around them, I'd be able to make the same kind of distinctions. As it is, I'm pretty much on the, "Ooh, that's a bird!" level.

Ciameth In reply to Supaslim [2010-10-25 02:16:29 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, I know an obliging turkey vulture I completely forgot about her. There are a few different species of owl I could do too, since their heads aren't as similarly-shaped as most hawks.
