Description
Raptor/hawk head at different angles. These are all the same Red-tailed Hawk, but he molted from juvenile to adult plumage while I was collecting these pictures so there is color variation to the feathers; the lighting also changed day-to-day. This bird is not a falconry bird, but rather a permanent resident at a raptor rehabilitation center. He came in from the wild with a badly-healed coracoid break and cannot fly very well. His upper beak is over-long, so keep that in mind if you're trying to draw a realistic, natural raptor. I hope this makes a decent reference for people drawing birds of prey, gryphons, etc. Feel free to download for personal use. Not for photo-manipulation. If anyone is interested in a similar thing with owls, kestrels, another species of hawk, raptor feet, etc let me know.Great-horned Owl: [link]

10/26: Wow, the daily deviation was a surprise! I'm glad this is turning out useful for so many people. My gallery has a lot of other bird of prey photos that I usually allow people to use for reference if they ask first and credit back to the original, so feel free to take a look.

My friend actually got a Red Tailed Hawk a couple of weeks ago. I met it this weekend. They're truly incredible birds!

Wonderful!! I don't do many things with birds, but this ref sheet is so thorough about the different angles, it almost makes me want to try to draw something . . .
A wonderful addition to the deviantArt community!!

I love hawks. Except when they land in the tree just outside of my backyard and the cat is out there.

Such lovely shots and angles! It's always great to have a group of reference photos that are really useful in perspective of that creature. Very nice!

oh ma all your photos are amazing! raptors always have fascinated me. I've been drawing perigrine falcons a lot latley, it would be awesome if you could make one of these for a perigrine. What an amazing opporitunity to be able to photograph these animals up close, birds are so hard to get into a picture, even the ones just in my backyard!

Ciameth In reply to BlackSeaFoam [2010-10-26 21:41:59 +0000 UTC]
I won't be able to make one for a peregrine, though I would also love to have one for my own use. The peregrines at the center are too high-strung to tolerate cameras being held at all angles around their face. I wouldn't want to cause them any anxiety/stress. If you can find just a few good references of peregrines and compare how their heads are different to the hawk, you could be able to use this reference as a loose base for a peregrine head. I will also be doing an American Kestrel later, and that might work well for a general falcon head ref.

I can imagine how anxious they could be, being so fast and all. Ohh a kestrel would be awesome! would it also be possible to do one for a a horned owl or an osprey?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Ciameth In reply to BlackSeaFoam [2010-10-26 23:19:09 +0000 UTC]
Not an osprey (also surprisingly high-stress in captivity, poor guys--and fortunately, our rehab ospreys have all been released; none were permanently disabled), but Great Horned Owl, Burrowing Owl, and Turkey Vulture are the three I'm collecting pictures for right now.

No, he "belongs" to a raptor rehabilitation center at the university I attend. But he's still an ex-wild bird, so I guess I would say he resides there.
