Thanks so much for the tutorial! It was easy enough until part 5.
Could you or anyone perhaps tell me exactly what order each layer
is suppose to go? Is it shade, grayscale, then colored base? I'm
not sure...whatever order I put them in, either everything turns
too bright or the shading is still gray despite my fumbling with the
filters like in your video. Thank you again! ovo/

Hello! I'm not the maker, but maybe I can help a little.
From my understanding, the shading happens on the same layer as the grayscale, to make it simple. But you can put it like this on step 5-7: (orders top to bottom, with clipping hiearchy)
- Β | Line color
- Lineart (Lumi & Shade)
- Β | Base Color (Lumi & Shade)Β
- Β | ShadeΒ
- Base Grayscale
You can Merge Down the Shade layer to Base Grayscale to make it simple. If it's too bright, tweak the Base Color as the active layer using Filter tool. Let me know if this works * ^ *)bΒ

This is a really helpful tutorial. I have a few questions.
1: Can you apply this method to other programs like FireAlpaca, Krita, or MediBang Paint Bro?
2: Will this method still work if you use a free lineart that someone else made instead of making the lineart yourself?
Thanks for taking the time to read this .

Just random passerby, and I don't know if you've got your answer elsewhere already, but here goes nothing:Β
1. Yes. However, different program has different Layer mode. You need to experiment to find the one that fits your needs ; v ;Β
2. Yes, using Lumi & Shade mode will have that kind of effect. It's more helpful if the premade lineart is saved as Transparent PNG tho ; v ;Β

Hello! Thank you so much for thisΒ amazingΒ tutorial! I tried it right away!
But I have some problems though. After I finished the gray shading, the base color layer is placed on top of the shaded layer, right? When I set the base color layer to lumi & shade, it became too bright the skin turned white. I tried playing with the hue, saturation, and other settings but it only looked dirtier. Did I do it wrong? ;; Thanks in advance!

I don't understand why you could waste your time doing all these steps when you can easily do this no problem in Autodesk Sketchbook with no crazy tools.
π: 0 β©: 1
rinihimme In reply to radchoco [2017-01-06 23:11:43 +0000 UTC]
but you see, Autodesk Sketchbook is also missing a lot of key features included in other programs that are more popularly used; therefore one's efficiency might actually be raised by going through these steps?
π: 0 β©: 1
radchoco In reply to rinihimme [2017-01-07 20:28:14 +0000 UTC]
I think it just varies from person to person on what program to use. Also what key features is Sketchbook missing?

rinihimme In reply to radchoco [2017-01-07 20:32:03 +0000 UTC]
ah, I remember switching because I draw a lot of anime/manga type stuff, so I don't need natural brushes as much as features such as tone brushes, or features that have been a little more polished such as a fill tool or lasso/selection tools... it depends on the person, yeah ^^

i think it's so cool that you shade in B/W and THEN add colour...
i don't think i've seen any other tutorial do that!! *o*
it's so cool tho, thank you ;v;

Zykzi In reply to GingerCat-P [2016-08-08 01:36:49 +0000 UTC]
For this kind of art style, yes neither have I seen this.
I think it's very common for those who especially want good contrast in their works. If you work with b/w first you can get a good contrast going without having to go mess with the colours too much to get them right.
