While Derek had plenty of moral reasons to not be a criminal, he also had one practical reason; he couldn’t handle isolation. Over the last five days the confines of his cell were beginning to drive him mad. He was either going to break out or kill himself, and neither would be easy. As much as he tried to remember how Mission Impossible went, all he could think to do was bounce a rock off the wall. Which he couldn’t do, so just annoyed his jailor by throwing them at the wall.

Because if there's one thing we all hate, and most of all, it's boredom. Hell, we even have experiments that show immense pain is preferable to not having something to do.
