The special effects were done on a separate layer in Photoshop, so there was no need to colour isolate it. As for the spear and eyes, I simply put a duplicate render on top of the original and reduced saturation by 100%. I then took an eraser to the eyes and spear to reveal the coloured layer beneath.

That's... actually really smart. And here I was thinking that it took some crazy Photoshop editing.
