Description Okay, got a title, at least at the moment, but any other suggestions will be welcomed

Also, I'd like to thank people for the help I got with this one, as you see I've updated the image with some small changes and colour tweaks. Thanks!

As for the tutorial I mentioned in the original description, I'm going to start putting it together. Let's hope it turns out good Oh, and I still haven't uploaded any close-ups. Bwah.

Okay, the story-thing:

«Whose sword is that?» the soldier asked of the old priest as he put down his shield. He was no real priest, but because of his vast knowledge of the world and of the gods he went by that title anyway. It was a title uttered with respect, as all the soldiers living in the border fortress were sure he had more powers than what he let them see. The old man looked where he pointed, and nodded slightly when he saw it.
«That one is the sword of the old prophecy. It belongs to nobody at the present time.» Carefully he lifted the dark sword off its place on the wall.
«Priest, you know thousands of old prophecies, it tells me nothing.»
«Only very few of them are true. This one is. The sword is made by the gods, guarded by my family for thousands of years. We are meant to give it to the one who will lead our worlds to war. The champion of the world, if you will.»
«War? But there is no war at the moment.»
«Not here, no, but there will be. And it is of the utmost importance that we win it.»
«And the owner – future owner – of this sword is the one going to battle.»
«He or she will lead the forces, yes. I do not know all of the prophecy, but two persons only have the right kind of powers. Enemies, they are, and they will have to fight eachother first. To find who the true leader will be. It is crucial that the forces are united, but we do not yet know who is best fit for the task. Both of them will have a different way of going to war.»
«So it's regardless who wins?»
«Not entirely, but I guess you can say that for the final battle, yes. However, the outcome for our world will be vastly different.»
«It looks simple for a sword for the saviour of the world. I mean, it's a curious metal and all that, but look at the marks, it has clearly been used in battle before. It won't hold much longer.»
«Ah yes. When there are enemies afoot, you take the closest weapon you can find. Do not look so shocked, it is only a sword as any other before the winner claims it. Besides, the power of its metal is the least of its powers.»
The soldier shook his head, smiling. «I can only pretend to understand all of what you are saying.» Then suddenly he frowned. «You said your family was guarding it... Who will guard it after you? You have no heir.»
«It won't be needed.»
«You mean that... they are already here?»
«Oh yes, they have been in the world for a while.»

Lots of things done with this, and lots of revising. Painted Shanouna's face twice, the flames several times, revised their clothing, re-painted the clouds in photoshop when it turned out the texture didn't show up in the resized version... Bwah. And the sword! Don't get me started on that one. Painted, re-painted, re-painted, adjusted layers, adjusted layers again, tweaked the highlights, changed it again...
Started out with a pencil sketch done this summer, then put in the basic colours and whatnot in Photoshop. Moved to Painter to do the rest, then back to Photoshop in the end for final touches.

And still I wish I could do them better - why must reflective metal be so hard to do? But I'm really glad you think it looks good

I still think, by far, that this is the best artwork you have ever done

Beautiful composition, and i absolutely adore the conflicting colours you've used to portray the two characters ^__^

I AM...Oh man, I am so proud of you. Amazingly proud, this is amazing. You've improved so much lately it's just stupendously great.
I haven't exactly got any critique on this, but that's because the entire picture in my eyes is PERFECT. I love it, the textures are great and the shading immaculate. I have no idea how you draw like this, you're my total idol O____O
My favoruite parts of the picture are the sword and the woman/girl. XD I like the guy aswell but he looks evil.
I am truley awe-struck, and dumbfounded in all senses of the word. If I could, I would buy a print (I know i've already said so, but I seriously would) It's that good of quality.
You should draw like this more often

Thanks I think it helped a lot that I had the entire picture in my mind from before I started it. But I'm really, really, really glad that you (and other people) like it.

The thing I really like about this picture is the use of warm and cold colors. Despite the cold colors you used in the background for Shanouna, her face looks very warm and soft. On the other hand, Arodhi has a warm background behind him, and his face looks cold.

Thanks I used the same base colour for both of their faces to get some kind of balance in the picture. And now, after I've finished it and have thought about it, it really fits the characters' personalities as well Kinda lucky.

Fantastic composition!
Her face does not seem to me to be flat, the hard work you put into this really shines through. The story adds a further enchanting dimension to the piece, making it all the more intreiging.
I would definitly love to see the tutorial for this

Well, I do, at least to a certain extent, but I don't know... I never feel I'm getting anywhere with it.

That sword does look really good. Although, oddly enough, they both seem rather expresionless. It's really hard to get any sort of character out of them. I think the clothing turned out really good on them.

For a title, how about Double Edge Path?

Ciuva In reply to ladyshalafae [2006-10-23 10:23:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

I was about to protest "how can you say they're expressionless!" - but then I looked at it again and you're right. Which is so annoying, because they were, at one point in the process, far better in that aspect. Expression and all. Especially the guy. But that's just typical...

Well I know I'll get caught up in a painting, and keep seeing the things I wanted to be there, instead of the things that really are there. I mean, I can see some anger in him, some innocence in her....but it's not strong.

Ciuva In reply to ladyshalafae [2006-10-23 20:27:46 +0000 UTC]

I can see what you mean. And after all, I know these characters so well that I see what would be there instead of what is there. I've been *trying* to fix it a little in a new version - if you'd take a look and see if it works better, I'd really appreciate it...

This is really great! The first one looks more... realistic, almost... I think it has something to do with the skin tones. The flames look amazing, as does the girl's hair.

This is great!
I think I like the colouring on the top figure more...but I love the way you did the flames...
And the sword is really well done..especially all of the little cracks in it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ciuva In reply to DeverelDraws [2006-10-22 23:41:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot Yeah, I agree... I was trying to give them both a somewhat similar skintone, but I think it worked best on the girl... The lower figure has a skintone that looks grey on him. Which was what I was supposed to remember to fix before finishing... Oh well.
