Description Just some basic instructions to making an emote. It's realy best that you know how to use Fireworks MX or any of Macromedia's early Fireworks programs first before trying this. Although I have made the intructions as clear as I can you will need basic knowledge of the program first of all, like most tutorials suggest. Enjoy!

i am having trouble, I have fireworks MX, not 2004, but i don't think that really effects me. I am new to fireworks, personally perfering flash as the all time best program ever, so i have NO IDEA how to do anything, so i followed your instructions step by step, but i got stumped by something. when i make the elipse (15x15) i don't know how to put in the line. There is NO OPTIONS in the properties like you describe them. are they the properties of another tool or what? PLEASE reply fully, because i reallyreallyreally want to know

thankyou

If you are using Fireworks you should be able to view the stroke options in the properties panel. If you cannot find the properties panel go to window + properties. When you select the elipse you have created, the stroke option should apear in the properties panel where you can change the pixel-thickness and so on.. check out step 2 in the tutorial above when you are making the elipse

i do that (you should check out my gallery) because im in love with amcromedia flash MX, i think its the best program in the world

but it doesn't turn out right, because flash is a vector, and fireworks is a ...not vector. and when you export it as a .gif, you'll never know how many pixels it will be. and theres this perfect pixel amount thats meanto to be use in making the best looking emoticon that you can't do on macromedia flash

wonderfully done...

a) i was wondering what fireworks was *ticked
b) i colour my emoticons pixel by pixel but thanks to you i now have the option to gradient fill *ticked

if i had a choice i think pixel by pixel is more satisfying

its great to get this kind of tute out there for others

thank you

In Fireworks there's on the left hand bar called "Frames" onceinside you can create small animation sequences by doing what's called 'frame by frame' animation.

i don't see why not. Deffinately for creating the border and the pixel-by-pixel shading - you'd have to try it out

Very informative and easy to follow if you have Fireworks. I like how you've highlighted the important things in yellow.
I can follow the basics of emoticon making and colouring but I don't have Fireworks so there are bits that just pass by me, I have never worked with a programme like it. So, for Fireworks users, it's a fantastic tutorial that has been carefully thought out and composed. I'm sure a lot of people will find it extremely useful!

Looks much better that my dumb Ulead - it has few of the options you show here and it makes me draw everything in Paint cause even this way it's much easier and faster ...

I wonder how long the Fireworks' trial is ...
