Description
Part one of a two-part tutorial (+ addendum). This part is about making the base. It can stand on its own if you are making a static emoticon.First up - designing your own style (or basic emoticon tut for the lazy and uninspried...)! Part two - animating! Adendum - GIMPified post-processing! Eventually I'll teach you the magic of Photoshop masks! And their uses! In almost everything! With exclamation marks! Exclamation marks! EXCLAMATIONS!!!
Shazaam!
NOTE to the impatient: I originally learnt from this tutorial here (above) - that will cover all the basics about how to animate, but I can plan to go much more in-depth, covering things like making your own style, tweening, and post-production in the GIMP for smoother animations on the web!
Why was this updated?
I am having a massive overhaul, making my emoticons 15x15. I never had a reason for 16x16 - it was an accident that stuck around. 15x15 is the unofficial emoticon size and is set as restrictions for lots of things, so - I will be remaking all the bases for 15x15 size. See journal II'll type after this) for more.

Yeaaaah..... I rather do need to update this, because gradients is a crappy way to shade an emoticon. But I haven't gotten around to it.
And even if I did a video, I'd need special permissions to upload one.
And even IF I had special permissions.... I don't know how to take a video.
I will also reply to every iteration of your comment, for T3H LULZ.

how big should the work space be for making an emote?

Whatever feels comfortable... enough space for the emoticon without tempting you into animating through all the space, making unnecessary work for an unnecessary size. I use 30x30.

This is a great tutorial! Thanks for sharing. Now I can make emotes...!
Also, changing my sliders to HSB helped me change colors better than the default setting. Thanks for that, too.

You're welcome!
And yes, I am glad I accidently found that option for HSB, it makes things SO much easier.

I am doing REDESIGNING!
...'sides, look at the artist's comments. People who are really impatient can look at Dutchie's for a basic tut on animating... not as comprehensive and detailed as something I could do.... ...but should for the LAZY BOOGERS out there.

Yeah, well, I wouldn't be taking advice from people who knit their own shoes. Not that, I uh, do that. 9In fact I have learnt how to knit more than 5 times and still can't do it)

Dang, Photoshop...
I wonder if Paint.Net works for this, or Unlead Photo Plus?

Can't say, I haven't used either. I know Paint.NET is a lot like Photoshop for painting stuff... at least in theory... BUT I doubt it can animate, which is the next step.

Yes, I know that part in animating, but Paint.NET is almost liek Photoshop, but I think that Photoshop got more options and is better then Paint.Net...
