Description "Soul King" Brook (aka "Humming Bones" Brook) is the top hat wearing, cane-sword wielding, energetic, thrilled to be alive, gentleman skeleton musician of the Strawhat Pirates and the 9th member of the crew. He ate the Yomi-Yomi no Mi, which granted him one resurrection after death, plus some awesome underworld related powers. In life, he was a member and eventual captain of the musical Rumbar Pirates, well before the time of Gold Roger. His crew befriended the baby whale Laboon in West Blue by playing songs for him, and after he followed them into the Grand Line, they made the difficult choice to leave him in Crocus' care at the Twin Capes, fearing the unpredictable sea would be too dangerous for such a young whale and Boeing to reunite with him after the conquered the sea. They eventually made it to and got lost in the mysterious cursed area of sea known as the Florian Triangle after suffering a vicious attack that left the entire crew poisoned and dying. They used a tone dial to record Laboon's favorite song, Binks' Sake, and Brook swore to deliver it to their friend in his second life. Unfortunately, his soul got lost in the fog of the Triangle and by the time it found his body there was nothing but bones and an afro left (Brook's hair has very deep roots). Once he was revived, he was left drifting in the Florian Triangle for fifty years with no company besides his dead crewmate, until he met the Strawhats. Luffy was so amazed by the living, breathing (though he has no lungs to breathe! Yohohohoho! Skull Joke!) Skeleton that he immediately invited him to join the crew, which Brook instantly accepted, though he didn't take it seriously because after 50 years of loneliness, he didn't think anyone would actually want an 88 year old skeleton on their crew. After an intense battle to regain his shadow and the shadows of Robin, Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy after they were stolen by Gecko Moriah, Luffy officially invited him to join the crew again, and Brook joyfully and tearfully accepted, being truly glad to be alive for the first time in 50 years and having his hopes of seeing Laboon again rekindled. Brook is the oldest member of the crew, the only one to be captain of his own seafaring pirate crew, and the only member never to have sailed on the Going Merry. Both his pre-timeskip age and height (88 years old and 8' 8") are references to the number keys on a piano, and his birthday reflects his Devil Fruit (4=yo + 3=mi = 4/3 or yomi). He is represented by the number 9 and the colors black and white, and his animal is the horse (rather, the skeleton of one). In the real world, he would be from Austria (fitting for a musician) and his job would be as a detective. He would also win a 50 meter race between the Strawhats, as he is incredibly fast due to only weighing about 8 pounds. His speed also allows him to run on the surface of the water for a short time.

Aww thanks! I have a hard time with backgrounds, but I thought that the music notes would be a fun way to incorporate his skill for using music in battle!

Wonderful picture of Brook!Β
If you don't mind, could you tell me what drawing items you use to make your drawings?

Thank you! He was super fun to do!

I don't mind at all - I love when people ask me that!

I use Prismacolor colored pencils, blending several layers of color (for example, Brook's hat jacket, and pants have 4 colors) until I get a solid area of color (no paper showing through) and the shading is to where I'm happy with it. Other than that, for now I've just been doing the sketch with a good ol' #2 pencil and inking with a basic ballpoint pen, like the kind you get at a hotel - nothing too fancy, because I like for the Prismacolors to stand out!

Ah, I see. I have a few p rismacolor pencils, so it is a bit hard for me to shade. You did a great job with the shading though!!

Thank you! I am really heavy-handed when I color, and Prismacolor lead is really soft, and that combination is how I get the look that I do. I really enjoy using them, and at this point wouldn't even think about using any other colored pencils! I guess they've kind of turned me into a colored pencil snobΒ  Β

Ah, don't worry, your coloring if very nice! And I agree, prismacolor pencils are the best color pencils I have used to far.
