Your fabric will have a direction that is the most stretchy. You want to align the stretch arrows on the patten with the stretch of the fabric. That way the luma gets a big belly instead of being tall and skinny. It's very important.
Yes, the pattern already has a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You'll want to sew on the dashed line.

Thanks , sorry for the lately reply , I just got around to actually posting some things and starting DA. Thanks for the help (:
How would I know which direction the fabric is most stretchy? Would I have to stretch it myself?

I will!
This is the best way to do it.
Sew the little white part on the black pupil with just a few stitches.
Then, sew the black pupil on the luma on the front BEFORE you stuff the plush. This will make it easier.Finish the rest of the plush as shown in the diagram, and that is how.

So cute!!
I'm a bit new to sewing; what kind of stitch are you supposed to use?
And how do you know which stitches to use when for other kinds of plushies and whatnot?
^____^

Quick question, do you have any restrictions on using this pattern to make plush to sell? I'm thinking about an Artist Alley table at a convention and would love to make these for it.

Question: How would you make a black Luma?
I mean cuz the eyes are black so if you made a black luma (like from Mario Galaxy) would it look strange?

this is so cute! great job with the luma, and thanks for the tutorial! is fleece like a softer version of felt?
and quick question for general plush-making, but how do you make the pattern for the plush? when I try to draw my own pattern it will look fine when flat but halfway through making the plush I'll realize the pattern doesn't fit together very nicely xD

clearkid In reply to ginger-paw [2012-03-29 02:07:42 +0000 UTC]
Fleece is softer and it stretches.
Pattern making is more like geometry then sewing, you have to make the pieces wide enough to go AROUND not just what it "should look like." Think about peeling an orange, there's more than one shape the peel can end up in, but none of them is a circle. You also have to measure the seams to make sure the ones you match are the same length. Patterns can look quite different than the result.

Hey... cool tutorial, by the way... but I am stuck at step 4. I put the two halves together and they don't fit. Is there a reason why it's like that? I managed to do steps 1 - 3 fine, but when assembling together, it doesn't fit. Help!!!! XP

I would make it if it was tinier because I don't have enough cotton. I would like it to be the size of my palm.
