Description THIS TUTORIAL IS FOR YOU TO LEARN FROM, NOT TO COPY OR TRACE OVER PIXEL BY PIXEL.

Base of the doll featured at the end: JuliePM.deviantart.com/art/Hey…
Base of surfboard is a QBee.com exclusive

This is a tutorial that shows how I made my beach background for my Beach Baby Doll. It's got a lot
of ideas that can be used for other beach and waterscape scenes, such as the kind of hues for the
water and the sky and when to dither and when to AA. It is NOT an explanation of colour picking,
dithering or AA themselves, but involves those things. Watch out for tutorials in the future for those
Β things specifically, I simply can't cover them all in one tutorial

Does require the user to have small, basic knowledge of terminology such as "dithering",
"AA" and "hue". Therefore I would recommend this for intermediate difficulty and above.

I'd suggest just keep having a go at large gradients, I did a lot of them before deciding on a process that seemed to work for me, it certainly wasn't overnight xD

Pixel art is the same no matter which program you use, they are all hand placed pixels.

Umm.. it's my artwork, it's not for you to go cutting up into pieces for your own art, it's actually a tutorial to learn to make backgrounds on your own. Please don't steal my work.

This is really good and I could never do it exactly like you haha! I used it to help me with this, just with my own style and spin on it: [link]

backgrounds are a weak area of mine
but my first try isn't too bad [link]
thank youss

Maybe try varying the angle of the ocean itself, since that same one isn't always right for every perspective, but I looove how the sky is going, awesome work C:

This really helped me with the background for [link] Thanks!

It does, but it's worth it C:

Oh you mean in picking the colours?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmilyVanSlyke In reply to ClefairyKid [2013-03-06 12:02:16 +0000 UTC]

I meant the whole thing (doing the sky, the ocean, etc.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ClefairyKid In reply to EmilyVanSlyke [2013-03-06 23:17:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see, because I couldn't see dithering, so I wasn't sure if meant colour picking or if my eyes are really bugging out (which they do from strain sometimes haha )

I just used the tut for the ocean/sand.

Those waves look like PMD2 (when the Krabby blows the bubbles at the beach) lol..did you draw them?

Thanks, though the only thing I was interested to learn from was the dithering effect.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ClefairyKid In reply to xMeganiumx [2012-08-27 01:09:47 +0000 UTC]

Uh I don't rip sprites if that's what you mean? I pixel it all myself, but I rely on a lot of manual aa to make things look ok

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xMeganiumx In reply to ClefairyKid [2012-08-28 00:42:22 +0000 UTC]

ik i just said it looks like the waves from PMD2 when the krabby blows bubbles

Yeah I didn't know there was AA in Pixel art D:

This is SO MUCH helpful!^^ I actually used only the sky part, because in what I'm going to do does not... well, include sand and water. ._. the only term I don't understand is "AA". =_= If it's not hard to you, could you please clear it up?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ClefairyKid In reply to Sylvaur [2012-07-12 23:19:44 +0000 UTC]

I know, that's why I wrote in the description "can be used for things with sand OR water OR sky" and why I wrote "It is NOT an explanation of colour picking, dithering or AA themselves, but involves those things. Watch out for tutorials in the future for those things specifically, I simply can't cover them all in one tutorial"

Please try and bare with me, I WILL do my best to write a tutorial for each aspect but at the time, it was easiest to make a beach/sky one because that's what I'd just worked on

Sylvaur In reply to ClefairyKid [2012-07-12 23:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't need another tutorial, actually. This one was pretty much helpful itself.
Thanks to your tut, I made this: [link]

You don't have to, but you can if you like, it might help others who want to make a sky like that find out how to do so But I'm not fussed c:

Aw that's great, I'm glad I made it seem less intimidating for you c: I don't know where the idea to do a beach scene came from, the only thing I actively avoid is human faces/figures and I'm trying to fix that a little with learning to doll
