Description Almost ever since people began performing on stages, there has been the use of backdrops to help set the scene. This is true even with cinema films, where the cost of creating a backdrop (also known as a matte) is often a fraction of the price of creating the "real thing" and sometimes this would be impossible anyway. With the advent of computers, the art of making mattes have become even more sophisticated.

Which is why this medium should not be overlooked in MMD. So here is a basic tutorial on how to create a simple matte, but the principles outlined can also serve as a basis for more complex scenes.

Check the physics. Very often that's at the root of the problem. There are tutorials on how to fix these kind of issues in my tutorials gallery Physics folder.

Okay, so do you know how to use other people's backrounds? like for example this:amiamy111.deviantart.com/art/M… like how do you do it?

Trackdancer In reply to RejectedGemstone [2015-04-26 19:49:22 +0000 UTC]

Right, that 'background' is a 3D model; most likely a 'rip' from a commercial product given the quality of workmanship that went into creating it. As such, it is not a background flat which is what was discussed in this tutorial, it is an item which is loaded into MMD against which your Vocaloid models can be posed.

There are different ways to load these types of models. If they are PMD or PMX models they are loaded using the model control panel. If they are DirectX compliant models (.x), then they are loaded using the accessory control panel.

Background image files are not model files, display them via the menu controls across the top of the MMD UI.

Is there something somewhere stating how I go about saving a stage once I've created it for mmd? I seriously don't feel like using blender for animating on top of making stages, models, clothing, and props.. that's just a little too much.. I know there's a pmx to blender plugin, but I don't think stages use the pmx filetype. I've been googling for a while and I've found nothing. I don't want to make a matte, either. I want to make a full-blown stage with lights, screens for viewers in the back of the stadium, speakers, mics, etc.. I don't feel like cheating and I know blender is capable of actually making it, I just need to figure out what the friggin' heck I save the stage as to be able to use it in MMD and .. and... *sigh*

I'm so sorry for the long post.. but when the MMD wiki doesn't even have anything, you kind of get tired of looking...

Stage models are saved either as DirectX x-files, PMD or PMX format. Very often, for a single stage, I would use a combination of formats to get the results I want.

I don't use Blender so can't really comment on that application. All my stage models were made using SketchUp for the modeling and with my more recent stages, PMD to edit the materials and add moving components (bones/facials) where these are needed. There is a basic tutorial on building stages for MMD in my Tutorial gallery if you want more info.

Trackdancer In reply to HopelessBanana [2012-05-26 18:55:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

Stages in MMD are kinda like a wardrobe - it really helps to have a specific stage for your particular project. Sounds like I'm shooting myself in the foot as I mainly do stages ... but MMD is a virtual medium and there are some real advantages behind that.

The method here is a "poor man's" approach, but effective nonetheless and is something that anyone can do if they really wanted to.
