Description
This tutorial shows techniques that can be used to blend a 3D MMD model with a 2D background for making (in general) still images.Japanese animes often feature beautifully rendered background images against which the characters in the anime are drawn. We can in essence essentially do the same thing as the original animators but working within the MMD environment using 3D models. However, let it be clearly stated that there are legal issues surrounding some of the techniques discussed in this tutorial and that this tutorial is not intended as inciting the wholesale "lifting" of material from copyright protected works.
You can actually create these types of backgrounds fairly easily using Photoshop filters (which I suspect in many instances, this was how many of these images were made in the first place). Note also that DA itself has huge libraries of stock images that can be used as backgrounds for MMD.
LEGAL NOTICE
The background image used here is from the anime series Tamako Market. A single image only is used here and this is done so under FAIR USE guidelines as permitted for educational purposes.

Yeah, you usually don't want to see the guide lines in a final quality render.

Thanks, that's very kind of you.
When I first started MMD, a lot of tutorials either were not very clear or had no idea about what they were talking about or outright confusing and a handful are actually totally wrong.
So as I learnt how to "MMD", I just presented what I learnt (after checking the facts) in a manner that I myself could understand in the hope that these tutorials could help others as well.
