Description This came to my mind a few days ago when listening to my neighbourgs talking about eating disorders.
Stereotypically, those disorders are automatically associated with girls, and often people ignore that boys can have them, too.
For example, my cousin's boyfriend is anorexic. He barely eats anything.
Even though, according to statistics at least, eating disorders seem to be more diffused between the female population, more awareness of males that have eating disorders should be spread.

True, I read an article once about a teenage boy who nearly died of anorexia.Β

EXACTLY. I'm a trans boy who's recovering from anorexia...

I think it comes from the fact that more girls are concerned over their appearance and want to get thin which then leads to anorexia. I'm a girl with an eating disorder, ARFID, and think it's stupid to believe that only girls have to deal with stuff like thatΒ

Can confirm. I once dated someone with an eating disorder. That person was a man.

Once we were learning about eating disorders in health class, and the teacher told us that most people with eating disorders are female, since some of them see supermodels and think that they don't look good compared to them.
But eating disorders are often caused by stress, and anyone can be stressed.

I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING!!!

Ever hear of theΒ NoceboΒ effect?

I think eating disorders may be more distributed throughout a certain gender due to the fact that people are toldΒ that it is. Basically, you hear that you are "more likely" to get something, and you "get it". But it may actually be the NoceboΒ effect screwing your head!

meh, its just a passing thought. carry on.

I agree. I don't know why people say only women can have eating disorders, but I've read a bunch of books about human health and I've read several true stories about men with eating disorders. I also read that 20% of men with eating disorders will eventually be killed by them, so this is a very real thing and IDK why people think it only happens to women.

I think people think this way is mostly because most of the men who have eating disorders goes unreported or is underreported. Though the statistics show in the link below show that women are more likely to develop eating disorders then males. The could also be underreported and men are less likely to recieve treatment for it. This is largely do to the fact that it is often viewed as a 'Woman's Disease.". Just like with sexual assaults, its stereotypically viewed as "only women can be raped.". Thusly, like with the eating disorders it is underreported.

Well yeah, and I can't imagine being a guy and having a serious problem with food, but being too embarrassed to speak up because...how many people would laugh at me for admitting I puke up my food all the time? Sure, girls can definitely take flack for that, but for a guy, it's the double whammy of being a MAN and having a "girly" problem. Like geez, that would suck.

NOTE TO THE BUTTHURT: I am in no way implying that girls with EDs have it easy. So get over yourself.

I'm not butthurt at all , I was just giving my feedback on this subject. I don't know where you got that idea nor why you are getting upset over my post when all I said that males with eating disorders are under reported. Β Not to mention that post that you are replying to is over 8 months old, did you even bother to read the cited sources I have linked under my feedback also. I cited that for a reason so people could read more on that if they wish to.

I hate people who think that. My friend nearly died because he wouldn't eat anything about his step ma died, we had to bring him to the hospital and force food into him. He didn't do anything but puke over and over. Yes, but that doesn't matter because "Only girls have eating disorders".
