Description
Story:Based on my initial concept drawings, this ship is designed for speed, hence the name of the class. She's designed with a saucer roughly 1/3 the size of the famous Constitution-class starship, and will have four warp nacelles, allowing her to reach speeds of Warp factor 8.5 at standard cruise speed, while she could theoretically handle a maximum speed of Warp factor 9.25 (TOS Warp scale). Launched in 2215, the design would prove to be the fastest Starfleet had until USS Enterprise managed to achieve Warp factor 11 in 2267, and by 2268, Enterprise could safely handle such a speed. The Tachyon-class design would be phased out in 2256, when war broke out with the Klingon Empire. The Tachyon-class simply wasn't powerful enough to face the Klingons with her quad phaser emitters, and thus was discontinued in favour of more heavily armed starships. The Tachyon-class ships that were already built continued to serve until the last one, USS Endeavour (NCC-392), was destroyed by the Klingons in the second Klingon-Federation war in 2267. The lead ship of the class, USS Tachyon (NX-216), would be decommissioned in 2260, after her final five-year mission.
About the model:
I know I messed up on the structure above. It's temporary, anyway, primarily just being used as a mount for the navigational deflector. The shape is about what I want, though. Scale on this was HARD. The structure above the bridge will now only be one deck, as I forgot the bridge structure is actually two. It will curve up slightly, allowing the bridge a bit of space. I know I still need to model the structure below, and that'll be the next thing I model. I just haven't decided whether or not to have a deck below there, probably not. And, of course, I need to model the propulsion, the four warp nacelles and the impulse engines. I also need to model the phaser emitters, and at some point add windows. I'd also like to model the interior eventually, though that of course won't be coming for some time. Let me know what else you think I should do!
