The scene was originally going to be much more involved, more characters in different poses but we ended up focusing on just the main couple. They were to be primarily silhouetted with some of Pompeii and Vesuvius visible. Check out how the final book cover ended up looking here .
I know there is a movie coming out about a young couple in Pompeii using a similar image and yes, it is a complete coincidence.
