Description This is the Rufus hummingbird, photographed in the Ballona Lagoon Conservation Area in Marina Del Rey, uploaded a second time with a larger crop and attention given to noise reduction, as well as overall composition. This is the better file, I think, and I hope you will forgive me for loving the quality of the light so much that I gave it a second try. It is very hard to get an exposure of the bib feathers fully reflected, so I am trying to make the best of it.

This is an interesting photograph, one I simply couldn't resist but write a few words about.

Most obviously, the cadre excessively void, which is an evident drawback in the artistic technique. However, I can also see this as a feature - when the object is such a small animal the empty composition shows it as a little creature in the huge world. I like this effect. Furthermore the monotonous grey background devoid of any detail directs all attention towards the hummingbird. The combination of colors is excellent - these grey and red hues are harmonious and the grey back of the bird also adds to this, while the lustrous feathers on the throat shine like rubies and create a spot of intensive color to please the eye.

Technically the cadre is good - well defined exposure, perfect focus, excellent sharpness, but not excessive so the softness of the feathers is preserved. There is some subtle noise visible in the background, but this is almost inevitable in areas of such uniform tone. The composition is fair - although the branch is not perfectly positioned, the bird itself pretty much is.

Finally, I'd like to say that compared to the other version of this photograph ( [link] ), I like this one much better - not only for technical reasons, but also for its superior artistic qualities.

This is certainly a well thought out critique, which I thank you for. I had entertained misgivings about the crop, but you have erased them, and confirmed that that I had that aspect right, for indeed my desire was to show the small bird in a large field. More importantly, you have also confirmed my growing sensibility that less is more when it comes to processing a file achieved with the 300mm lens (with or without a converter) when that exposure has the right light to bless it with. Hence your critique has helped me to learn some important lessons in the in the school of experience. The time you invested for my benefit is much appreciated.
