Description ookay. so the subject's been on my mind for quite a while. i'm an atheist, and i, as an individual, never really thought prayer worked. however, if someone comes up to you if you're going through a tough time, or you have a sick family member or friend, or WHATEVER is going on, and says "i'll pray for you", or "i'll keep you in my prayers", you be respectful, thank them, and move on. telling them that prayer is a lie is going to upset them. besides, prayer is what they believe works best. in their mind, they're doing what they believe is best for you. even if it DOESN'T really work (and i can't prove if it does or doesn't, i don't believe it does but i'm not one to judge), just let them pray. they want to help you, and that's the best way they really can. if they tell you they'd like to pray for you, don't go on a big ass atheist rant on how there is no god, prayer isn't real, yada yada yada. first of all, you sound like fucking ONISION, and nobody likes onision. second, you're being highly disrespectful. accept the damn prayer and move on with your life. you don't have to think it's real to accept someone wanting to help you in the best way they know how.

I can honestl understand why it kind of might feel like someone's forcing their belief on you by saying this .. but seriously, it isn't. They're not trying to covert you on the spot - you definitely don't have to believe their prayer will amount to anything - they're just thinking of you at the very least, and hoping for your, and you should be thankful.

As a Catholic I'm so thankful to read this point of view from an atheist. I hope you have a lovely day.

Not really ... they're not forcing you to believe. It isn't all about you - people have different beliefs whether you like it or not. I accept not everyone believes in prayer, but just telling them that you'll pray for them shouldn't really be considered disrespectful in my opinion.

After reading some of the comments, I'm going to pray for you all in the hopes that you all grow a thicker skin.

unless they're prayers are about me "sinning" by being a lesbian, those can shove it far up thier ass. but if they want me to have a nice day, i'll take it with a smile on my face ^^

Of course. I shall only shruggle my shoulders and say: "As you want. I do not care".

Depends on what they are praying about. If it's over sinful behavior, then no. If it's because I had a bad day, I'd accept it and hope for the best

yeah, true. if they were telling me they would pray for me if i told them i was a lesbian then i'd be pissed.

I'd feel that would be okay in private, but just telling something like that to your face would be extremely rude and insensitive.

im gonna use this one too, being rather religious and being judged for saying "i'll pray for you" by non-christians before. bless this stamp and you as well! you seem like a nice person <3

I agree with this. When I was younger it used to piss me off and make me angry, like they were trying to push their religion on me, but obviously I've grown up since then. I'm not religious, but when I'm going through a tough time, it means SO much when someone says they'll keep me in their prayers or chants. I mean it's just so kind and thoughtful, and I find it really comforting. So I very much agree with you <3

also Onision is awful. You need to watch "gines." on YouTube read his books, she's absolutely hilarious and his books are absolutely horrible LOL

Really, the only time I don't like "I'll pray for you" is when it's something idiotic like "pray the gay away".

I agree. Let people pray for you. It can't harm you. Sometimes people just don't know how to help if you're struggling. Maybe they try advice and it fails. Some say they're sending positive thoughts and some say they'll pray for you. Studies show that thoughts can influence how we feel. It's how placebos work, so whether or not you believe in the power of prayer, them believing at least gives them peace of mind. And, when you want to help someone but don't know how, that can go a long way.

More often than not in many situations, when someone tells you they will pray for you, it's generally a sign of disapproval or the result of a negative situation and they simply won't help you in a useful way.

Taking offense when someone says they will pray for you is a valid reaction. Of course in some situations like the one you described, it's not offensive in any way, even if praying doesn't solve anything (but in their mind it's better than not saying anything at all).

i agree, if they're praying because you're "sinning" in their eyes that can be very disrespectful, but if it is simply because a family member is ill or something then i see it as okay.

When people do say this to me I don't say anything back because I don't wanna start shit and it's really not a big deal, but I do still think it can be pretty rude and condescending if they know you aren't religious.

Prayers aren't supposed to work all the time. Do you think God will grant you sinful requests? It's up to him if he wants to accept it.Β

clivehandforth In reply to Campelt [2016-09-28 21:45:03 +0000 UTC]

i do agree with you, but if somebody would like to pray for you if you are sick or have a family member or close friend who's sick, people shouldn't be hateful. i don't personally believe prayer works, but if somebody is telling me that they'll pray for me (as long as it isn't in a hateful way), i will accept it and thank them.

I've seen people be on leafy's side. But never seen anyone hating on Onision.
I feel like people misubderstand Onision a lot

unholynecromancer In reply to MMCHA [2016-10-10 04:29:53 +0000 UTC]

IMO there's not much to misunderstand. I don't know anything about Leafy but Onision's mocked people who self harm when that's usually a sign of a mental illness, he tried to capitalise on someone's murder for views, he's a smug jackass about being a vegan (despite the fact that he killed a turtle he had and then ate it in soup, wtf) and an atheist, and has a history of seducing girls under the age of 18 when he was in his mid-twenties or older (which is a crime in the US, by the way).

I don't know about you but I don't really want to try and get to know someone like this any better. =/
