Description
I'm still experimenting to see whether I should use a cartoony or somewhat realistic style on my comic, "Miss Doomsday". Here, I've drawn out page 2 of the comic using the realistic style. The realistic style would be nice because it allows me to draw the darker and more dramatic parts of the comic in a more solemn fashion but, more importantly, it allows me to draw Anne Hedonia (seen here) in the altogether. Here, she's 18-20 years old. The cartoonier version would make her younger.
What do you guys and gals think? Good page, bad page? Go cartoony or realistic?

I love how in the 5th panel, the cat happens to be located right on the inside of her leg!
The page as a whole is beautifully laid out!
That monkey clock does a great job of creating an ominous end-o-the-world feeling. Then the fact that she kicks the monkey creates a very cool foreshadowing effect showing that she will do the same to her situation when the world does end... Assuming that's what happens, and what I picked up on wasn't something I just made up... haha...

The fifth panel is supposed to be a visual pun, that's true. I'm glad somebody caught that.

Good page.
You never know you may get to use the cartoony versions one day. Anne seems like the sort of character who would hate waking up in a kind of cartoony wonderland full of singing birdies or perhaps as her younger self. Of course you have a better idea of the format than me.

Thanks, Martigritte. A cartoon apocalypse, I like that. And I have been thinking of an apocalypse where everybody ages backwards.
I have the whole story planned out, from beginning to end. I just need to script it.

Thanks, Diego (and I'm honored by your comment and fave).
If I may ask, do you prefer this over the more cartoony style?

DiegoTripodi In reply to cluedog [2009-11-03 06:46:45 +0000 UTC]
I really like both versions, Zac. In my humble opinion, the choice would depend more on the tone of the story than anything. That said, I think the cartoony style is something worth exploring as it might allow to make things that wouldn't look very natural in the realistic style (like heavily exaggerating a character's expression), and I also think both styles, at least on the surface, have your trademark finishes and the detail you always put in your work, so you could work in the cartoony way, while keeping your "graphic identity".
I think a mix between the 2 would look pretty coherent, and enable you to go in any of those directions depending on the scene you're handling.

I like the style exhibited on this page. If the story is what I think its gonna be, I'd say this is the style you need to be in. You can always go back...

Thanks! I'm a sucker for realism, so I feel this style may be more artistically satisfying (as well as accentuate the more dramatic moments of the story). That, and I get to draw Anne with big...well...
The style will really be more artistically satisfying.

I think that both styles are really good, and that if you could find a way to balance the two based on the seriousness of each situation in the comic; it would really accentuate your own personal style.

That's an interesting idea. I'll mull over it. Really, though, my cartoonier side will probably seep through, regardless.

StylusRose In reply to cluedog [2009-11-03 07:13:56 +0000 UTC]
I think that you already have the technique down, you just need to bring it out. Besides, if the cartoon is supposed to be more serious, you'd loose the little details you'd want to add in certain moments.

I have to say that I am a fan of this style which borders on the noir. Great page by the way, you tend to craft your pages very well, I seldom find any of your layouts to be bland.

Thanks, Larry! I've been wondering what your opinion on which style to use, so I'm honored you've put in your two cents.
It does have a noir look to the page, now that you mention it.
These pages take a lot longer to draw than the cartoony pages but, from an artistic standpoint, they're much more satisfying.

You are welcome Zac! I am glad my two cents go to a good place.
I like to see any type of your work, but on this project I think this take is what it needs. I think that you should satisfy your ego above all else when it comes to art, for that is what a majority of art is.

this style will need more time to do than cartoon style, but will earn a shit load of good comments
I say this page own 100times the quality of the first one, here we can clearly see you have took the time to get used to this new character. For the question about what to do etc, what do you think of doing the original series in "realistic" and make front cover/ inside pages between chapters and back page in cartoonish style?
You're the man, don't worry about what to do!

cluedog In reply to SHarles25 [2009-11-03 02:20:39 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! One of the big drawbacks of drawing in this style is, as you've noted, the detail and rendering will take a lot of time to draw.
Still, I find myself drawn to working in this style, if only because I can draw Anne looking like she does on this page.

Too realistic for your tastes? Why so, if I may ask?
I've been thinking of doing a cartoony version of the same page, for comparison purposes. I haven't decided whether to do that, or just draw Page 3.
