Description Here's another preview of the "Miss Doomsday" submission I'm sending out to publishers. This one is page 2, the page prior to "The Chameleon" (or page 3), seen here: [link]

Just Anne and her cat chillin'. Ah, but what, exactly, is that girl planning?

This is Anne at her purest. Actually, her habits look like they're not too far removed from my own. Well, save the smoking part.

Looking good, Zac. Something seems different about the style but I can't put my finger on it.

Thanks, Pete. For "Miss Doomsday", I've been attempting an alteration to my style a bit. In the past, I would put a lot of hatchwork on the figures. Here, I'm leaving that off and putting all the hatching on the backgrounds instead. I'm not sure if that describes any difference you're seeing in the style, though.

It's amazing what kind of humiliation cats can endure. Johnathon (the name of the cat in this comic) is no exception.

I love all of it. The middle panel especially. It's all the little details that make it so captivating, mixed in with your art style. You know, drawing a black and white comic is never easy, particularly when it is designed to have no colour. To make a page interesting in just white or black is really difficult. You make it look so easy. You are a very observational artist, and it comes across in your work.

The last panel lacks impact (in my opinion), it feels too basic compared to everything else. Perhaps some lipstick on the lips (like panel one), or some shadow under the nose to add weight. Otherwise this is a terrific looking page.

Thank you so much, Fladam, not only for the kind words but the honest critique.

I believe black and white art is an underrated art form. I've met several people here on DA who have told me that I should color some of my art pieces, as though, somehow, the monchrome nature of my art was illegitimate. A lot of people have the attitude that if it's black and white, it's not worth the time. I've seen a similar phenomenon on art sites like Conceptart. I suppose it's natural to some extent, as color jumps out more and can be very eye-catching but, nonetheless, there can be some fine art that is overlooked because of this bias (not that I feel I'm a fine artist).

I agree about the lips in the last panel. They do seem a little Spartan compared to the rest of the page. Again, thanks for the honesty.

Colour art has its place, and so does black and white. In my opinion, it's far harder to draw in the latter. Trouble is, from a distance (ie, thumbnails) they are not very inviting next to a fully coloured image which screams 'look at me'.

I don't know what your stuff would look like in colour, I have never imagined it in colour, and for that reason I wouldn't recommend adding colour. I think if you plan to colour an image, then you draw in such a way to accommodate it. Opey for example totally benefits from the tones you've built with cross hatching, that would be lost in a flood of colour (in my opinion).

Yes, colour does reach out and grabs you by the eyes, but black and white is a tricky artform to master, Frank Miller crafted a film-noir b & w style in the Sin City Series to much success. Maus and Persepolis are both classic b & w works. I think people mainly associate black and white with indie publication (although Sin City is more mainstream) and that's a good place to be.

Colour is aesthetically pleasing for sure, and a majority will always gravitate toward bright hues, which forces b & w artists to push the boundaries with such a limited pallette.

Good lord this looks fantastic! The dirty room, her attitude. Anne looks like a girl who'd spit in your mouth and you'd ask for more.

Thanks, Larry! For Anne, I'm going for a sexy, yet real look. She's not perfect with regards to her face or body contour, yet, hopefully, she still comes across as attractive. I think of the seven pages I've drawn for the submission, though, this one is my favorite.

I can see why Zac. She looks great. I am now not a fan of that perfect girl 1990's style crap, though I was fooled by it for a couple of years.

Good luck you my man.

Cool. I like that the body-type is so natural looking. Slightly puffy with imperfections, as opposed to other comics that strive for only perfect bodies.

cluedog In reply to Kloob [2010-07-23 16:44:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Kloob! In previous versions of Anne, I went for a more perfect, idealized body but I thought it would be more interesting to have a girl with more realistic physical attributes. I wanted her to look sexy but not perfect. I'm glad to hear that that is coming across in the drawings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kloob In reply to cluedog [2010-07-25 23:00:01 +0000 UTC]

It is coming across and I wish more comic artists would experiment with body-types as well (large manga breasts don't count!). We're all of us different shapes and sizes!*

Nice detail, nice drawings, nice shading. Only bit that's off is the last panel. What happened to her lips being dark (red?) as established in the first panel?

Anyway, nice stuff!

cluedog In reply to GreatBigThings [2010-07-23 16:42:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the critique, GreatBigThings. Good point about the lips. I was going for more detail in the first panel with the lips because it was a close-up but it does contrast with the last panel, forming perhaps a bit of an inconsistency.
