Description
Here's an ode to what I feel is one of the best American animated television series in history: Ducktales. Ducktales was a cornucopia of quality, from the origins of the cartoon (the comic book works of the legendary Carl Barks), voice acting (Alan Young, Russi Taylor, June Foray, Frank Welker, Terence McGovern), the rich vivid animation by TMS Entertainment (the Japanese studio that produce Akira, Lupin the 3rd, and Detective Conan), and just plain marvelous story telling. Lordy, the eighties was a graveyard of cringe-worthy cartoons but Ducktales came at a time when cartoons were undergoing a new golden age and actually inspired studios to spend money on the animation and design of cartoons that were almost entirely hand-drawn. The computer generated cartoons that you see in cinema today are wonders to behold (like Pixar) but there can be a real beauty to cartoons drawn by hand. Today, many of the television cartoons remind me of the toons of my youth in terms of animation and design: pure dreck. Ducktales was one of a kind, any decade.Other Duck-related imagery:

I haven't watched the cartoon, although the designs for some of the characters to me are a bit irksome. It looks kind of like they put Carl Bark's artwork in silly putty for a lot of the characters or tried to imagine what if Ducktales was designed by Picasso. Having David Tennant voice Scrooge is intriguing (Tennant seems like he's everywhere on TV and only slightly less ubiquitous than Morgan Freeman). From what I've gathered about the stories, they sound like they're well done and thought out, with references to the old show, Darkwing Duck, and Carl Barks while doing their own thing. I don't like what they did with Launchpad but I do love that Donald Duck is a whole lot more involved in the series. I'm not sure I'll seek it out but the show does look interesting.

Not sure if you've seen the poster for the upcoming season 3, but they're about to add in a lot of Disney stuff (Goofy, Chip+Dale, Talespin, etc.). Don't know if it interests you enough, but I figured something like that would really appeal to peoples' nostalgia.

Disney cycles between great and terrible cartoons (most companies do unless they are just all terrible), but Ducktales, Talespin, Rescue Rangers and Dark Wing Duck were a true pinnacle of art! I love the new DuckTales, but the original holds a place for my generation that nothing can surpass.
Loves: Gold, Goldie and Family!

You got it on the three loves! I agree about Disney. About the time Disney came out with Ducktales they also released "The Little Mermaid". In addition, they came out with a number of wonderful films around the early to mid-90's. Now Disney is just recycling their old classics or making sequels. I'm not one of those artists who hates Disney in order to be some elite artiste or cool. I grew up on a lot of Disney cartoons that I think were quality works. But now it's "Frozen 2" or a completely CGI "Lion King". Sigh.

SvtFoE and Amphibia are examples of Disney TV still doing entertaining originals. Movies typically blow, tho

Talespin was a good cartoon. Actually, the entire Disney Afternoon block was a good one.

There's a single drawing showing upcoming characters on the new Ducktales with the current cast. Among those not yet seen are Daisy Duck, Goofy, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers (except for Zipper the Fly), Goslyn Mallard (Darkwing Duck's adopted daughter), and two characters from Tailspin. Ludwig Von Drake has been on the new show in flashback. I like the new series, although I also understand those who don't and why they feel that way. I loved the old show, too.
