This is a truly wonderful piece of imaginative vision! The thing in this piece that really allures my gaze is the breathtaking environment! The dimly lit atmosphere deeply amplifies the beautiful lighting and adds deph to the piece! The character design is also done very well and every element in this piece is enhanced with glorious detail that brings it to life! This is afantastic piece and I would love to see more! Great work! Kind regards, Princess Luna

Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words. I also love enviroments because they can get the imagination going more than portraits can, so it makes me happy that you liked that part.

It's *MonotoneInkwell 's design. I think it's because the pony is only half pegasus.

pony with hat /)^3^(\!!!!!! Now that's out of the way, this is a beautiful piece. It has a lot of atmosphere. I'm not sure if you designed the pony as well but she has a really nice concept.

Thank you! The pony was designed by ~LadyMonotone who requested it. The hat was part of the deal.

It's kind of odd how Steampunk is automatically associated with Victorian England. Sometime I wanna see Steampunk Japan from the Shogun era or Steampunk Ancient Egypt or Steampunk Aztecs.
Still, it's well made picture, though I think I'm missing something; it seems like it should be saying something poignant, but I just don't get the message. Is it supposed to be lamenting the march of industry and the shift away from agrarian pastures and fields to cold, hard steel, or is it about something less tangible, like the loss of innocence and self that comes from losing a wing and the corresponding imagery is created to define and refine that feeling?
Anyway, lovely. Definitely a fave.

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment.
I guess it's just because steam technology was invented in the West and around that era, so it fits naturally. For this picture, the commissioner sent me a couple of reference images to give me an idea what she was looking for. But other than that I agree that it would be fun to ponder over what it would look like if other civilizations had obtained steam engines.
For the other part of your comment, I definitely see what you mean. Sadly though there is no deeper meening to the picture, which makes me feel a bit bad for being so boring and shallow. D:

Yeah, I know that it was that time period in history and region that steam power came into its own, I'm just saying, it'd be nice to see a bit more imagination now and again. I mean, steampunk Aztecs? I think of one of their temples made out of steel and blackened by the fires of industry, rivers of blood flowing down its side from their ritual human sacrifices and collected at the bottom to be processed into some sort of product as befits a Dickensian society. Or maybe steampunk Egyptians that have zeppelins with giant hieroglyphics painted on them, like an eye of Ra, while below the Nile is crisscrossed by bridges covered with factories and power plants and great smokestacks rising into the sky while a huge metropolis covers the valley from the delta to the Valley of the Kings. Or old Japan, where samurai fight mechanized automata in epic sword duels that last for days while steam-powered wings carry assassins into the upper reaches of a shogun's castle. So much can be explored with the concept, and yet everyone just runs for Victorian England. Don't get me wrong, I love the Victorian aesthetic, I'm just saying, not everything has to be the same.
Ah, well. I'm just being an a-hole, don't mind me; the picture really is nice, my whining is about the genre in general.
And you're not boring or shallow, I was asking because I know that some artists like to put such themes into their work, and simultaneously some artists just make something because it looks cool. Either way is fine: real art is something that is created with practiced skills and effort, and appreciated for its beauty, not because it needs some sort of social or philosophical commentary. A lot of artists get big, stuffy heads thinking that way. In your case, it's just a fun drawing, to which I say "awesome, it does look cool."
