Description
"They call me a machine, they call me a weapon. But what they don't know, is that I am so much more... I am alive."That isn't a quote from the game or anything, I just came up with that randomly while making the piece, so I decided to put it in the description.
It's about time I did an actual Sonic character. I grew up on Sonic, and it's my favorite game series. But until now, for my Sonic related pieces, I've only made OC profiles, or drawn some of my Sonic Forces Avatars... so basically just Sonic OCs. But now I'm here with one of my favorite Sonic characters... the ancient Gizoid, Emerl. I actually wanted to do both this and Infinite, but I couldn't decide which one to do first, so I flipped a coin, and this what was chosen (but I will do Infinite next).
If you don't know who Emerl is, then I don't blame you, he's not a very prominent character. But he is awesome. He is an ancient weapon that was found by Eggman in Sonic Battle, and as we find out in Sonic Chronicles, he was made by the Nocturnus Clan, a rival echidna clan to Knuckles's ancestors. He is a powerful robot that can replicate the attacks and abilities of those he fights or watches (as my friend put it, he is a copy cat). In Sonic Battle, you can customize his move set with the moves you copy, and make him the ultimate fighter (but more importantly, he was the first customizable character in the Sonic series, not the Avatar in Sonic Forces).
For my drawing, I made him look more advance (upgraded, as I put it). First of all, I added pupils to his eyes, giving him more ability for expression. Second, I know Emerl is called that because he can absorb Chaos Emeralds, but he has no green on him (much less emerald green), so I added a lot of green to his design. And finally, made a lot of little touches to make him look cooler, and gave him a sword, playing up his ancient lineage (and because I really like swords).
I also made a lot of effects to the image. I duplicated the color layer, made the new back layer black, and then used a blend mode (color burn, specifically) for the front color layer it make it darker, added circle gradients on higher layers to act as glowing, even made some electricity, all to make him look very intense.
I don't like how I did the hands very much (I could have tried to do better), but all-in-all, I think it looks great.
Edit: I came back to this piece and changed the design of the sword's blade, but it is still has the same design style.

Very cool. Emerl was a cool idea and loved how he mimicked everyone. I'm really digging the sword and how the crossbar clearly shows it's connection to Emerl. I always thought it would have been cool to see some kind of Ultimate Emerl. You know with Knuckles' claws, Rouge's wings, Amy's Hammer, and a Chao drone that looks like him. All of it of course being made from his own body. I always liked how Cheese was kind of a super weapon in that game. He throws up shields and can gather energy to make himself into a powerful missile. So I always figured that would be something Emerl could mimic.

Actually, I believe that Ultimate Emerl is achieved once he has all seven Chaos Emeralds, and this is signified with that third eye of his opening up. I'm not sure, it's not really clarified on in the game, but I believe that is the case.

I'm pretty sure you are right about that but I was thinking more for a cool visual. I don't know if you ever saw the Justice League cartoon on Cartoon Network but there they fought an android named A.M.A.Z.O. who could mimic all the powers of any hero he saw. There have been other iterations but that one was my favorite because he took on visual indicators of every hero who's powers he mimicked. Usually this was something they actually used but sometimes just something that was an easy indicator of the hero.

Okay, I see what you're getting at now. Yeah, that would be interesting. Emerl does have some slight shape-shifting abilities. He can morph his arms into weapons, like Gamma's attacks, but when it comes to, say... flying with Tails or Rouges abilities, instead of temporarily gaining tails or wings, he just swings his arms. It's funny, but I don't like it because it looks kind of impractical. And just took a closer look at Emerl's sprites, and it does seem he can... I guess materialize items for his moves (or he finds elsewhere before the battle, I don't know), so I don't know why he can't make new appendages.
Though... if it interests you, even before your comments, I've been planning something involving the Gizoids that may be like what your asking for here. It might be a while, I'm working on few other things right now, but stick around, you might be pleased.
Also, now that I get what your talking about, I imagine the chao drone being a design combination of a Gizoid and Omochao. ...Just lose the annoying voice.

Cool, I can wait for you to finish that. And I think the flapping arms thing was just a shortcut they used. That way Emerl could use flight from both Cream and Rouge with the same sprite animation. I remember her arms spun around when he used Tails' flight ability. And I always figured Emerl was kind of like a super advanced T-1000 since he could stretch and warp when he mimicked Chaos. But there was at least one artist who really digs chao who did Emerl and Gemerl.
I always figured if Emerl was like the T-1000 in his abilities then I also thought Gemerl would be more like a transformer in the live action movies. Not direct warping but a lot of folding and rearainging to do what he needs. I also liked to thing Gemerl would have built his own chao after the events in Sonic Advance 3 by using the wreckage of that super body he made when he had the Chaos Emeralds. I also liked to think Gemerl would have made a kind of shifting all purpose weapon like the na'at from the Sandman Slim books. It was a weapon gladiators used in Hell. The writer described that it looked like a pipebomb when compressed to it's smallest state but could extend out to a ten foot spear or even further when it was collapsed into a whip. So I figured Gemerl would build something like that as well. Maybe it looks like a lightsaber hilt when reduced but he could command it to be a giant hammer, a sword, a spear, or a whip.

Interesting ideas. I have done a Gemerl piece as well (I'll link it below), and there you can see what I did with him, and with his "super body", which I believe is his version of Ultimate Gemerl. But those are great ideas (and the T-1000 / Neo Metal Sonic liquid metal idea would well with Chaos' form and attacks).
