Description Here is the second art piece of my Hyperdimension Neptunia characters drawn in a Sonic the Hedgehog style series, this time with our favorite Lastation tsunderes, Noire and Uni.

If you want to know more about how I came up with this series, read up on the description of the first “Neptune and Nepgear the Hedgehog” piece (link below). So, let’s jump into the choice of animal I made for Noire and Uni to be. Of course, Uni is the same animal as Noire because they are sisters, and thus, would be the same because of that relation, so I’ll mostly be referring to Noire specifically. And well... this was a lot more convoluted than you’d think.

To start, picking the animal to be was challenging, not because I didn’t know what it should be. Like with Neptune and Nepgear, I wanted to make these goddesses based on an animal mascot on the game consoles they represent. And I knew that the best choice would be the bandicoot, based on Crash Bandicoot (Spyro the Dragon would’ve been a good choice too, but I think Crash is more prominent nowadays, plus I only wanted to use real animals, not mythical or fictional animals).

The problem was that I couldn't imagine how Noire and Uni would look, way before getting to the sketching phase. Because of this, I was considering to scrap the animal mascot idea, and make Noire a cat (based on the whole thing about cats and tsunderes), but then I figured out what exactly my problem was the same time I figured out the solution to said problem. The problem: despite both being designed in cartoon art styles, Sonic and Crash have very different art styles. I was planning on drawing a Sonic-styled bandicoot, but Crash (and other characters in his games) were the only bandicoots I could think of as a basis.

So what was the solution? Well, I just randomly remembered that one bandicoot character in the Sonic series: Perci the Bandicoot from Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric and the TV show (well, the show also gave her a twin sister, Staci, but that doesn't matter for this project). Yep, this was saved by Sonic Boom of all things.

So, that's it for the animal choice, right? Well, not really. So, when I was sketching, I only used an image of Perci for a reference (and, of course, Noire and Uni). When I got to the vectoring phase, though, I decided to look up an image of a real bandicoot, because, I never actually HAVE seen an image of a real bandicoot, and I got curious. And when I did, I noticed something. I looked into it a bit more, and I can confirm: bandicoots have ears, but Perci the Bandicoot, does not.

Okay, that's not completely true. Perci does have ears, but they aren't there most of the time. From what it seems to me... you see, Perci has a head scarf, wrapped around where the ears would be. The ears are only there... when the scarf isn't. It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, because sure, we can cover our human ears with scarves and be fine, but these are upright animal ears. It just seems awkward and uncomfortable, or at the very least, make it hard for Perci to hear, since they'd be folded down. Also, it doesn't even look like they fit under that scarf.

And finding an image with a good view of Perci ear's without the scarf (that wasn't someone else's fanart) was a bit tough, but when I looked at them... they just seemed like a copy, paste, and recolor of Sonic or Amy's ears, which means they're hedgehog ears, not bandicoot ears, which are a bit different. This whole thing seems like an oversight they tried to correct in limited means, on the part of Sonic Boom. And basically, I had to retroactively add ears during the final vectoring phase that I had to design myself.

(Also, here's something I found out when I was glancing at Perci's wiki article. She has different voice actors for both the game, Rise of Lyric, and the TV show. I don't know why this is the case, but the interesting thing here is her voice actor for Rise of Lyric is Erin Fitzgerald... who was Noire's previous actor. I did not know about this when I started this piece, and used Perci as a basic for this Noire piece, much less, intentionally considering it. And I don't know how I keep stumbling onto these things, 'cause this isn't even the first time I found out a character in Hyperdimension is voiced by someone who also voices a characters in another game or game series I like. Arfoire, the series major villain, is voiced by Laura Post, who also voiced the Empress in a Hat in Time. I figured THAT out when I heard the Empress laugh in the Rush Hour opening scene around the time I was finishing Re;Birth 1. That is a very distinct laugh. Also, consider this, and know that someone, probably without knowing this, made a mod in a Hat in Time that swaps out Hat Kid with a custom made Neptune model. Have fun with that!)

So, on to Noire and Uni themselves, starting with Noire. I believe I talked about working with Noire on the cover art I made for my story "Nepsisters: Healing the Empty Heart". ...It was pretty much all of that again. Noire has a lot of detail in her outfit, so it took a while to make. And like last time, I didn't even add in the full details, simplifying some of them down a bit. But I did add a little more, unlike the cover art (look at the top of her boots). But really, this will be the last time I plan to draw Noire for a good while. At least for now.

I decided to color her eyelids, so she has makeup on. Personally, I don't like the look of makeup, I find it's overdone and looks fake, though my female friends say it's best when it's subtle and not overdone. For Noire though, I thought the colored eye-shadow works for her, and fits her character (she does seem like the type to were makeup). But really, this was done so I could get that smug expression I wanted, and make it look good.

And for the pose, I wanted to have Noire do that twin-tail flick thing she does. I think it looks cool and fits her personality.

I enjoyed doing Uni, because the last time I drew her, that being the cover art I just mentioned, I only did a sideways view, to display her role in the that story specifically. This time I had the chance to draw a full view of her.

I didn't want to draw Noire and Uni with there weapons, because I don't think it's necessary for these pieces, but I still wanted to reference something that was more... unique about Uni (pun intended) compared to her older sister. So, for her pose, I had her doing a finger gun (take that as you will, she would definitely be the type to do so). I also liked that one official image of Uni sticking out her tongue. It's really cute! So, I had her doing that in my piece, but also had her winking, too. Honestly, this whole pose fits Uni's character super well, and is incredibly cute for her.

And since I mentioned it, here is the first chapter (well, prologue) for Nepsisters: Healing the Empty Heart: Nepsisters: Healing the Empty Heart: Prologue
