Description
So, here is the first art piece of my new series: The Hyperdimension Neptunia characters drawn in a Sonic the Hedgehog style. And we’re starting with, of course, the Planeptune goddesses, Neptune and Nepgear!

So, to start, since it’s the first piece, I’m going to explain how I came up with this piece. It started when I came up with a random idea where I came up with a hedgehog version of Nepgear that I called “Lila” (based on the name of her HDD outfit’s name, “Lilac”). Eventually, the name “Lila” notwithstanding, I came up with ideas for just about every major character as Sonic-Styled anthropomorphic animals, which I’ll refer to as “mobians” from here on for convenience. Sometime after that, I thought “why not just draw them?”

So, starting with Neptune and Nepgear, I made them hedgehogs, not just because that’s where the idea started, but because it makes the most sense. If you don’t know, Hyperdimension Neptunia is basically “the Console War if it was an anime”, and the main characters are goddesses that represent certain game consoles. Neptune and Nepgear represent Sega consoles, and since Sonic is Sega’s flagship mascot, then of course the Nep Sisters would be hedgehogs.

In fact, that’s the idea I went with, even though I will be drawing everyone in a Sonic style, the animal they will be is based on is a prominent animal mascot on the consoles they represent. (And of course, the Candidates will the same animals as their older sisters, because they are sisters and thus related, so of course, they would be the same.)

Now, starting with the series’ main character, Neptune, I want to talk about my choice of outfit for her. Neptune has two primary outfits, the “Parka Dress” and the “Jersey Dress”. Her Parka Dress is definitely her main outfit, but as you can see, I chose the Jersey Dress she wears in Victory / Re;Birth 3 for this piece instead.

While I will say that I think her Parka Dress better fits her lazy personality, considering it’s just an oversized hoodie she wears as a dress, I think the Jersey Dress looks cuter, and seems more practical as an outfit to me. But the real reason I chose the Jersey Dress is because of the bangles she wears on her wrists. Since these characters are being drawn in a Sonic style, I knew that I’d probably have to give them gloves, and the Jersey Dress’s bangles remind me somewhat of Amy’s bangles, so I realized it would work very well with that intention.

I did however add some additions from the Parka Dress, particularly the choker design and the top of her socks, since I liked the added detail.

Next, let’s talk about their hair / quill styles. I thought that translating Neptune’s hair into spiked quills would be difficult, since it’s so messy. But it’s messy in a spiky way, so it was actually very easy. That may have been the intention given what Neptune represents. As for Nepgear, her hair is much cleaner and longer, so I used Amy’s quills as a basis for the Nepgear’s (excluding the length difference). I was also able to get in the design of her bangs. And I knew I had to add that little tuft of hair sticking out that Nepgear had on the right side (left side in the viewing perspective in front of her), because I think that’s a charming little detail (it reminds me of the little split ends I added to the two front quills on my Sonic OC, Sapphire the Hedgehog, right behind her hair).

That’s it for any important info on the art piece itself, but I do have one little tidbit of info I’ve been thinking about. So, real-life hedgehogs, as you probably know, use their spiny quills for defense. But I’ve learned that there is more to that. Hedgehogs will find toxic substances, chew them up and mix them with their foamy saliva, and then spread that onto their quills, both to hide their scent and possibly poison predators with their quills. Because of this... I’ve had an image of hedgehog Neptune doing this with eggplants! Now, it probably would never happen, because one, mobian hedgehogs, of course having human-level sentience, would probably and very reasonably find this disgusting, and two, Neptune hates eggplants so much, that while she probably would consider them a form of poison, I doubt she would ever be willing to let one of those in her mouth for any reason, nor let its juices be spread on her body. But still, I couldn’t help but imagine it, so now you have to suffer with me.

Uzume and Adult Neptune (yeah, I know, a second Neptune, not really unique considering the idea of this art series, but I like Big Nep, and I believe she has to be paired up with Uzume)

As for what animals they’ll be, you’ll have to wait until I put them up to see that.

And you should know, I don’t plan on doing the goddesses HDD forms. Not because it wouldn’t be a fun idea, they could represent the Sonic series Super forms (and their Next forms could be similar to the Hyper form). It’s just that would almost double the number of characters I would have to draw, and I don’t want to take forever on these pieces. Plus, I think their human forms are good enough for my intentions.
