Description
Originally I had a somewhat different concept I wanted to try, like there was a singular ring of floating rocks with the central 'eye' still there, but dozens, hundreds of pilgrims migrating to pay homage, kind of like a Mecca in the middle of the desert with a rainbow of colors of robes and tents everywhere. Then I remembered that I had 30min. tops and at the 25min. mark um, did a lot of copy-pasta on the ring and built up this somewhat moving monument of a thing and got rid of the few pilgrims I had rendered out lol.Maybe one day my execution will be fast enough and clean enough where I can more or less do anything I can think of within the time frame, but as it stands there's a lot of fun ideas I just have to say "hmm maybe later" to haha

How do you draw something like that in 30 minutes? For a simple drawing, I need about three hours at least, not to mention larger or more complicated ones

You give yourself a very strict constraint and you try to do these every day. The first few will most likely be horrible, the next few atrocious, the few after that still pretty bad. But you'll notice that as you get real familiar with your tools inside and out, what does what at whichever speed, you'll hit marks better and faster than before and you'll compose images quicker, figure out fast tricks to generate lighting, texture, form, just overall you'll get better at it, like so many things with art.
But constraint is the first hurdle, repetition, refinement, and focus are the next. Keep at it, tell yourself it's totally, totally fine if the work isn't good or isn't up to par, because after enough of these you'll be amazed with what you can come up with in 30 minutes

Okay, I now know this isn't a style of art I could do. I hate working under time pressure and I can't bear looking at a piece of art I'm not completely happy with. Despite years of practise (not quite every day, but at least once a week...busy student...) half of my drawings still end up in the trash bin because I didn't like them in the end.
Ah well, I guess I'll just admire your pictures instead of doing something like that myself...

It's all about filling sketchbooks with ballpoint pen doodles It helped me a lot with letting pieces go and helping me accept that the finish of a piece is dictated by my own will and not the done-ness of something, that incomplete works can be complete in their own way hehe.
Gesture drawings, doodles, notes, ideas, quick sketches... and a pack of cheap Bics, like 10 for $1 at Walmart kinda cheap lol. I say give it a try.

Hm...okay. You convinced me, I'll try it.
As I was still in school I used to do a lot of biro sketches during the lessons - I think I'll try that again, some of them didn't look all that bad.
Also, I think I should probably learn how to create art digitally. You use Photoshop, right? Any tips for beginners?

Gogogo!
And yes, Photoshop is my go-to tool for digital work. I highly recommend checking out CTRLPaint.com, it was the single-most significant step in my transition to digital as a dedicated medium. Matt Kohr's tutorials are all spot on, very useful, well laid out, and the simple 3-pack brush download set is all the meat and potatoes you need to get started; the hard round he has in his set was the first brush I ever used that felt 'right' to me when I tried it out, it totally changed digital for me.
I know it sounds like I'm hyping CTRLPaint up a lot, but I'm very serious when I say that it took me from floundering about with my wacom to actually feeling like I might kinda possibly sorta know what I'm doing when it comes to trying to paint heh. I owe that site a lot and will always send people there because it was so fundamental to me, to my development as a digital artist
I wish you all the best, remember the main thing is to have fun with your work, do not fear permanence or incompleteness, they are both transitory bridges, the means to get you further along your path as an artist

Hmm, that website indeed looks useful. I know a few basics about (old versions of) Photoshop, my dad taught me as I was a kid, and probably have an old tablet lying around somewhere, so I'll get started soon Trying out new styles usually is a lot of fun, especially when it seems one can't improve their original style at this time.
Also, thanks for your friendly words

It's part of the parameters set forth by the facebook group I'm a part of: You have 30 minutes to create an illustration based on one of the daily themes posted, you can't use any photography in your image, like no photobashing, no photobrushes, you can look at images as visual reference but that's it, everything else has to be painted in. So you have 30 min. to create something out of nothing, which for me was a big challenge to tackle because I like lounging out when I draw, little bits here and there, maybe I'll render a section more than others... but with spitpaints it's 30min. of straight up painting, finding short cuts that work (and don't), accepting that some things will be just a wiggly brush stroke and you have to deal with it haha.
It's lots of fun and I think it's helped me grow as an artist over the last couple months that I've been doing them
