Description Cutting it close, but here is my entry to the Books into Movies contest at . I decided to make an adaptation of the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin. Keeping in tandem with Disney's current use of adjective-based names for there films like Tangled and Frozen, here we have Spoken. This is actually and idea I've had for a few years now but I've never taken time or had much reason to work on it. Then this contest came around and gave me the push I needed to get it made.

My incarnation of the story is a bit different from the original:
Rumpelstiltskin is a mischievous, impish being who uses his powers to con people for his own amusement. He has a silver tongue and is a master of disguise which makes it easy for him to trick people. Usually, he offers someone a great service or wish in exchange for something valuable.  He's itching for a new con and, after hearing about the troubles of a near by kingdom, sets about crafting his greatest scheme yet.
The kingdom of King Lukas is in great debt with no way to pay. One day the king is visited by a strange nobleman who offers him all the gold he'll ever need in exchange for his name and title. The king refuses the offer. The nobleman calmly walks away, claiming that unless he can "spin straw into gold" his kingdom will crumble.
In the same country lives Amalia, a young woman who is very talented with fabrics. She can spin, weave, and even tailor clothes. Her talents gain the attention of Prince Dominik, son of Lukas, who comes to her for some custom suits. The two find themselves smitten with each other. When the prince returns home, he tells his father all about her. He boost, quoting a strange poet he passed on his way back, that she could "spin straw into gold."
The king has Amalia brought to the castle and locked in a room with nothing but a spinning wheel and a mountain straw. She is ordered to spin it all into gold or else she will be executed. She tries all night, but can't do the impossible. Then, a strange old man appears in the room, offering to spin the gold in exchange for something of her's. She offers her necklace and, to her amazement, he spins all the straw into gold.
This continues for several nights. During the day, Amalia is allowed free within the castle where her relationship with the prince grows closer. On the final night, the old man once again returns. This time, he request something odd in exchange for his service... her name.

I decided to have Rumpy take peoples' names as in some folklore knowing something's name gives you power over it. By taking names, he is basically taking souls. This same trick eventually comes back to bite him in the end. If you know the story, you can guess how.

Enjoy!

Yay, someone else was thinking about Tangled and Frozen. Spoken sounds cool. ^_^
I like... I donno, most things about the poster. It's drawn pretty, it looks Disney-ish, the blank bg looks nice, and the title's lettering is neat.
So, you've thought of making a Disney-esque version of Rumpelstiltskin called Spoken before?
Heh, I like the summary. Sounds like a really good idea. (While looking at the poster, I was kind'a starting to wonder if all those characters could actually be the same guy or not) I'm not sure how much I remember from the original story, but I like how you have him repeat the phrase "spin straw into gold" to different people and where it means different things. Hmm... I wonder how exactly he'll use her name. I think he was kind'a like that in Once Upon A Time, right? But I don't remember it being that way in the original story, besides, you know. There could be something interesting involving that for a Disney movie.

Thank you!
Yeah, I've been playing with the idea of a Disney-fied Rumpelstiltskin in my head for awhile. This seemed like a good chance to finally use it.
I'm not sure how he operates in Once Upon a Time (I haven't watched much of the show) But I chose to make him take her name because:
A. In the original story, he asks for her first born son. I doubt Disney would go for something that risky.
B: In many folklore and fairytales, knowing someone or something's "real name" gives you power over them. Knowing Rump's name is what ends up defeating him, so I thought it'd be interesting if he also tried to gain power over people in the same away. That way, when he's defeated at the end, its kind of like karma. Just thought it'd be interesting.

Lovely poster and I like how you've done something different with the story of Rumplestilksin. It really adds something when people outline how they think Disney could do a story.

Haha clever rename. The line at the top is genius also. Your illustration of Rumplestiltskin genuinely creeps me out, you definitely nailed the villain look with him. The whole poster is super great.

Amazing twists! I like how you got rid of the most...problematic bits of the fairy tale like marrying a man who's threatened to kill you several times over. Also the name trick is awesome--way better then dragging more unborn babies into it! Great job!

Yeah, I figured marriage-by-sword and gambling over children wouldn't work in a modern story.
Thanks!

Nice. It would be fun to see a Disney Rumplestiltskin, especially since he has such a prominent role on the tv show Once Upon a Time.

Hahaha, I love the Disney Title for this!  (Apart from being funny it is appropriate, just a good title in general.)

I also like your spin on it, it keeps it from being too old-fashioned and revolving around the Princess' baby.

Code-E In reply to Wickfield [2014-09-02 03:02:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I felt that there was a lot of stuff in the original tale that wouldn't translate well in a Disney movie.
Glad you like the title. I'm actually kind of proud of it.

ooh.. I wouldn't want to mess with that Rumpulstilskin.. What a creep! You depicted him just like I imagined him. What I really admire in your drawing are the facial expressions, they look very good! You can see what's on their mind which makes the viewer being able to relate with the story!
Good luck in the contest!
