Dembe lived in Africa. He loved virtual role playing games. For his birthday he received a VRPG called Space Battle created by Virtual Worlds Unlimited. The game enabled him to play with people from all over the world. It even had an optional hypnosis feature so he could see things from the point of view of his character.

His character was an Asian woman named Dembe after himself. Although skilled in combat, "she" tended to keep to "herself". Her faction claimed part of the Kuiper belt and warned everyone not to enter their territory without permission. Several nearby factions had done the same thing with their respective territories. Between the territories of each faction were the disputed territories.

The object of the game was to gain as much territory as possible. One way to do this was to mine for rare elements, sell them, and buy more territory. Another way was to defeat a neighboring faction in combat and take their territory. It was riskier but the potential gains were greater.

It was also important to defend owned territory. Mergers and splits were not uncommon. This kept the game interesting and unpredictable.

New technology was constantly being added to the game. Instead of a whole bunch of stuff at once, it was only a little at a time. At first only the faction who had been researching in that area would know about the new technology. This was another way to gain territory. Eventually spies would steal the information which was yet another way to gain territory.

Dembe preferred simple combat to all the complicated stuff. Sometimes his character would defend "her" faction's territory and sometimes "she" invaded other territories and disputed territories. However, that was not his only goal.

More than the game itself, he enjoyed meeting new and interesting people. Sometimes they were hypnotized to take on the identity of a different character who might even be a different species and sometimes they were just being themselves.

Dembe's character was kind of a loner. Although "she" certainly knew how to develop strategies with others and work as part of a team, "she" really did not see the benefit in interacting with others outside of their mission. Dembe himself was kind of the opposite. He spent most of his free time interacting with others whether they were part of his faction or not.

His faction had merged and split so many times that it was no longer recognizable but that was the way the game was played. Eventually there would be only one faction and that faction would be declared the winner. After that would come the great reset which many people were dreading. Whatever came next remained a mystery.
