Description ‘I’m not going to give it to him.’ Sirse signed with a flutter of her hands, her gaze locked on the surrounding faces in the crowd.

‘And what makes you think that I want to!’ Jennivien protested.

Krecker gave a shrugging gesture with a tentacle, which Jennivien translated.

‘Krecker says that one of us should do it – or to send the new recruit in.’

Their gaze shifted turning to look at the newest fox to join their team.

A little taken aback, the vixen raised her hands defensively.

‘Don’t look at me – I just got here!’ And adding quickly. ‘Besides this seems awful personal – I’m not really sure I should even be signing this thing. He hardly knows me.’

‘Your on the payroll.’ Jennivien remarked, looking to Sirse for support. ‘That’s good enough.’

‘Agreed.’ Sirse signed.

‘If you think that I’m going to go in there you have another thing coming!’

‘Oh, really – well we’ll just see about tha-‘

The debate was rapidly cut short as several tentacles descended from the ceiling grabbing both foxes from behind.

‘Get it off me!’

‘Krecker! Now is not the time for cuddles! What? Well fine. Fine!’

Reluctantly Krecker’s grip loosened dropping both vixens to the floor.

‘You can understand that thing?’

‘That thing’s name is Krecker.’ Jennivien shot back testily. ‘And Krecker suggest a compromise. Random chance. We all draw straws. Short straw has to give it to him. Are we all in agreement here?’

Several minutes later…

Jennivien found herself walking up the stairs, her legs carrying her like one condemned and being led off the gallows.

Step. Pause. Step. Pause. Step.

To soon her legs had carried her to the landing just before the office door. Drawing in a deep breath she cursed the ill luck and wondered if Sirse had in some way rigged the outcome of the draw, then knocked.

‘Enter.’ Came the booming voice of her employer, seated behind a small mountain of paperwork that he appeared to be trying to make sense of. ‘Ah, Jennivien. What can I do for you today?’

Rooted to the spot she fumbled with the package in her hands. ‘Uh, well… You see. We, to say, me and the others, we all con-contributed to make you this…’  It took all her will power to move across the room to the desk.

‘I know you said how much you hate Valentines Day, and that you would, uh. ‘Flay the skin off the first person who uttered those words to you, or tired to give you a Valentine.’ The small fox took a step back. ‘But, uh – well we drew straws and – I’m supposed to give you this!’

Thrusting the small crudely drawn card his way. Jennivien recoiled back, expecting the worst. Instead, with an agonizing slowness she watched as her employer rose from his chair. His hulking figure made even more horrible as his body blocked the rooms primary light source.

Silently he plucked the card from her shaking paw, examined it. Jennivien’s insides that were already curling up now froze as beady black eyes swept over the pink piece of folded construction paper.

A simple heart had been drawn on its surface with red crayon, courtesy of Krecker, the local tentacle monster, and head accountant. Jennivien had to resist the urge to blurt out that it had been Krecker’s idea to begin with, and that she was just an accomplice under duress. But her mouth seemed to have stopped working along with the rest of her body.

With a single flip of his thumb he opened the card, she could see his eyes flowing over the words they had all written, his gaze lingering on their combined signatures like damning pieces of evidence.

And then he pulled it loose.

A single green Lego brick, worn and scratched with use. Holding it up to the light, he rolled it around, eight tiny nubs set in two rows of four.

‘A brick.’

His face had become an unreadable mask.

‘No…’ Jennivien, coughed, trying to moisten her dry mouth. 'I- it’s the warp core reactor of the X-45 series Prototype Klingon Bird of Prey Attack Cruiser. Manufactured in secret at the Krodian Ship Yards of Vega three, to be deployed into battel and tip the balance of power, thus causing the downfall of the Federation and the rise of the Klingon Empire!’

For a long moment, her employer just stared at her.

Slowly, reluctantly, a smile crept over his face tugging at the corners of his mouth.

‘So it is.’

Sinking back into his chair, he let out a long sigh, Jennivien, taking that as a sign of her dismissal made to go. She was at the door when he called out.

‘Jennivien.’

‘Yes?’

‘Thank you. And, Happy Valentines.'

Smiling in return, she gave a small bow.

‘Any time Mr. Shark.’

C.S. Notes:

It is no secret that I am none to fond of Valentine’s day, too much experience – And stand that Valentine’s day is a time I try to avoid any romantic involvement. To much commercialization, with hashed out sappy phrases, and expectation to buy cards at approximately $5-7.00 apiece is a little bit much for my taste.

I jokingly tell people that the holiday went down hill after they stopped feeding people to the lions. But apparently my demeanor is a little thick, and people often take me quite literally.

That being said, I there are still a few meaningful gifts that move even me.

The remnant of the X-45 Bird of Prey is a standing testament that even I can be moved. Either that or I am still coming down from the emotional high that seeing the Lego Movie 2 brought up.

Sadly the X-45 suffered a terrible fate at the hands of gravity, and did not join the fifth fleet but its memory lives on.

I’m surprised that CS did not come out frothing at the mouth. Considering how many teeth he has, it would be a horrible sight. Even Kracken would have fled in fear.

Still have to watch LEGO 2 although Rotten Tomatoes gave it a very poor score.

Lol Believe it or not, it takes a real lot for CS to get angry, let alone yell at anyone. He is best compared to Dumbledore from the book series Harry Potter, never having to raise his voice or threaten anyone to make his point. Instead, he simply is, radiating his power thought his voice, rather than any action he takes.

CS has also had to learn to try and not show to many teeth when smiling - for their sake.

Krecker is so hard to read, and truth be told, CS finds Krecker to be a little intimidating.

Now, the Lego movie 2, not as good as LM1, but for me it plucked three heart strings, which is a heck of a lot more than any movie has in the past in a long time. That and I actually felt something when watching it. It is what led to two inspirational pieces that I had to keep in mind and write out the same night after I saw the movie. One of which is the above story. The second one. Is a little to personal, but I will get it up later on.

To many feels! T.T

Yeah, it is a little mushy, feely sort of story. Brought on by The Lego Movie 2, which I could relate to quite a lot. That film ended up pulling several heart strings, and really resonated with me.

All the feels. T.T

I see that they're using the English tradition of using hand drawn cards for Valentine's Day. Of course, it's also their fault that mass produced Valentine's Day Cards became a thing, so I blame them. Where and when I was in school, we did not really give a fig about that day. There was no card exchanges and no one really cared how many cards you got. I got none. I didn't care.

Lol Bloody English. - Best sung. ;D

I recall a few tender years of that fun time, not to many of them all together pleasant. Our teacher mandated that if you wanted to give one person a valentine, you had to give one to the entire class, and then handed out a printed list of all their names. I was the socially awkward one, who was to afraid to give out valentines to the class because I could not remember more than a few peoples names. So I stuffed them into my backpack and then disposed of them so my family never found out.

Yeah, that was valentines day for me.

Truth be told, It's a bit of relief to not have to deal with it.

I well recall that Heart Day saga.
I remember winning a record......for the fewest number of Valentine cards.
There are numbers below zero especially when you count all I handed out for what I got in return.

I am like Mr Shark.
A figure to be reckoned with at your own peril.
I get approached the same way by my coworkers.

I was moved to a good place by this story.

I always like the Bird of Prey.
I always think of Klingons as Predators with a vocabulary.........and not so damn ugly.

Lol That's terrible. T.T

Glad I was at least able to shed some realism on the holiday. Knowing all to well what it is like.

I think my most memorable valentines day trauma was back in the early single digit grades. Our teacher mandated that if we wanted to give even one person a valentines day card we had to give everyone one, and then passed out lists of every name in class. It was strongly hinted at that participation was mandatory. So, like any malleable young mind, I went out and got cards, only to be struck with the horror that I knew only two people in the entire class of thirty. And in terror, I hid all the cards in my backpack, and then buried them in the woods when I got home. This way I would not have to tell my parents how socially awkward I was.

On a more positive note -

The Bird of Prey was the most beautiful of ships, its folding wings, its sleek design, it was a creature of beauty. That and the sound track when it decloked always got one's blood up and ready for a fight. Lol that about summarizes them.

I too was socially a mess.........add the now trendy ADHD to the menu pretty much covered my early life.
Tranquilizers the school recommendation.
A great doc disagreed finally test the IQ.
I was a sponge on dry land........flood me in a sea of knowledge stimulation and I settled right in.

Now reserved and much calmer.

I always felt the Romulans were a bigger threat.
Sneaky little bastards. Borgs seem too Doctor Who....ish. Humanized Daleks. Assimilate me??
At least the Klingons were in your face and let you know exactly how they feel about you.

I wish I could say the same, I learned that the best way for me to pass was to keep my moth shut, rather than risk the wrath of my professors. Save form my math teachers, I always got along well with them for some reason.

I hear a lot about the IQ teat now, my smaller sibling ended up buying several texts titled 'Cracking the IQ tests' and the like. I, on the other hand fell in that nice middle trance of avengers. ^^

Though in my defense, some of those questions made no sense. There is one that still comes to mind, it was of a grandparent and grandson on a river boat, and the grandfather keeps asking him to name the rivers as they go by, but the kid does not know them.

Then came the questions they ask about the story...

They had nothing to do with the story itself and contained such vague things like:

A. Through hard work and diligence one can become a river boat captain.

Ext.

I suspect I failed that question.

Lol I too wish they had gone into greater depths regarding the romulans, alas one has to go to the books for such. But there are some great original star treck stories to be found regarding the romulan war.

One of the best ones featured a Roman captain who enjoyed collecting rare and exotic plants. One of which turned out to be carnivores... so he puts it right next to the front of his desk and waits for his subordinates to approach.

It is hard to be dignified while warding off a giant plant with suckers and screaming in front of your superior officer.

'Heeeeeeelp! It's got meeeeeeee!!!'

Romulans have a great sense of humor!!

That IQ question is a good one.
Shows how you can infer related but not stated info based on a story. Reading comprehension.
My favorite!

Its one I do well.

That they did, and they had other fun quirks too, such as food of different varieties must never touch one another. For example the peas must never come in contact with the mashed potatoes.

IQ wise, God I hated those. >.<

Lol math was my strongest point, as it was one of the few subjects my father groomed me on. I just knew more, because my father drilled it into me to the point of absurdity. Before that though I struggled with the basics, my father used the old: repetition until your brain bleeds. Then train some more. I can still remember crying late into the night because my father would not let me go to bed until I demolished an understanding of the subject. T.T

But damn was I good.

My dad was a math wiz too.
He could do the problems without paper.
You just tossed him numbers and away he’d go.
Basic add, subtract, multiply and divide stuff.
But he did learn the higher math as he needed.
But he sucked at English and such.

I got the math later as needed in Trig and Calculus with some good teachers who explained rather than “Memorizing the Theorem” A equals B if C equals D kind of stuff.
I am actually dyslexic with numbers.
I see 7 and 9 but my mind will reverse it to 9 and 7 if I rush. I do best doing the number sequences in pairs when I write or say them.

Code-Shark In reply to Veteran1972 [2019-05-15 19:44:52 +0000 UTC]

Ah, for me it was remembering all those little steps when walking out a problem. For me if I understand how something works one way, I just backwards engineer the heck out of it until I can solve the problem. This would drive my teachers up the wall as in some of the problems I would generate an additional six to ten steps as I drag this whole thing out to its conclusion. More often than not my teacher started verbally insisting that we quote 'Used the simplest method to solve the problem.'  My counter argument was that due to my math being simpler than the advanced methods, that I was doing just that.

More gray hairs for my poor math professor.
