Description Her employer was monologuing again, something he tended to do when he wanted to make a point. Before him a pile of different tools and several weapons from alternate dimensions lay in a seemingly random heap, she knew otherwise. He had probably spent the better part of an hour arranging them to be astatically pleasing from their perspective, and accessible from his.

The variety was tasteful at least, and she recognized several of the more prominent devices, the hilt of a light saber, the curving shape of a zat nik tel, and the distinct form of a second generation phaser. Clearly her employer wanted to make a point.

Sitting across from them her current employer continued, picking up one piece of technology and rambling on about it for several minutes. Chancing a look to her side she looked up at the bear that had followed her in, Gus, huge for his species, or so she thought. She had not worked with a bear in close proximity before, but, for the last several weeks, at her employer’s insistence she had been trying to brief him on the dangers of multi-dimensional travel.

The task had been a daunting one, as it felt like she was dealing with a child who had a pension for stuffing forks into light sockets. And for the first twenty-four hours sense she had been dispatched, she spent the lions share of her time wondering if she was going to die a horrible paradoxical death.

Or, cause a dimensional breach, and implode a universe, the implications behind that were – unpleasant to think about. The paperwork would be a killer.

A dart flew past her with an angry swish, and for a second she wondered if he had caught her inattention and decided to take some corrective action. Following the darts path to the wall behind her she was relieved to see such was not the case.

The projectile had found it’s home in the photo of a wild haired man looming out of a large blue box. Over which was scrawled the word ‘Thief!’ and a date with a much finer penmanship. ‘Never forget.’ Sirse had wondered about that photo for some time, but had never brought it up, as it seemed to anger her employer greatly.

Returning her attention to the situation at hand, as the demonstration seemed to be wrapping up, and her mind kicked into high gear. As mortals tended to ramble, it was always an interesting game to try and rationalize what the end subject was, one she had become quite skilled at over her years of service.

Sirse’s eyes lit up, she could see where this was going, and did not like it, the bear behind her stood, apparently blissfully unaware, she envied him in that moment.

‘So’ Her employer went on, ‘I have a task for the two of you.’

With a casual demeanor, he slid a vanilla envelope over the table, and waited for her to retrieve it. Another warning flag reared itself in her mind. He was too calm, and there was a slight curl to the corner of his mouth, he was trying not to smile.

‘Everything you need to know is inside.’ His eyes were dancing, taking in a deep breath, Sirse took a step back – and ran into a shaggy carpet of fur. Taking her eyes off the being across the desk she shot a look up, when had he moved behind her?

Heavy paws came to rest on her shoulders, in a comforting gesture, had he somehow sensed her apprehension?

Before she could ponder the question further her employer extracted a small metal disk, she could visibly see the energy reverberating from it, her heart picked up a beat as her body tensed.

‘And off you go.’ Her employer said with almost casual dismissal, and with a flick of his wrist, the disk sailed across the table, and the world vanished in a flash of white energy.

For a terrible few heartbeats Sirse felt herself being drawn out of the room, the world dissolved around her in a seemingly random display of color and sound that assaulted her hears, even after she had pressed them firmly back. Behind her, Gus’s claws dug painfully into her shoulder and she wished she had a voice to cry out with.

As quickly as the distorted sensations had begun they again began to recede. The world began to take on familiar shapes that her mind could process and categorize, plants, foliage, trees… It took her electrified senses a second to sound off, and another second before she was able to process what where she was.

The world around her had vanished, the familiar office she visited upon completing an assignment was now replaced with lush jungle and an assortment of fallen trees.

Tropical, humid and with very pungent scents of thing she had not detected before.

Casting her gaze down to the folder in her hand she read the block letters, her hazel eyes widened, and she mentally let out a groan.

In very small font was written three words: Jurassic Park Operation.

.

C.S. Notes: Hello, and welcome to a five piece short story featuring the the small mute fox Sirse, and her current partner Gus. This was something I have always wanted to write a book about, but ran into several problems - one being that the story, would be to short to be anything other than a comic book. But, who didn't dream about the possibility of a second team being sent into Jurassic Park to retrieve that canister of shaving cream?

Lol! I recall seeing at way to young an age, and for the next two years lived in terror of raptors coming out of the woods to attack me at night. It didn't help that we had a 25lb cat of pure muscle, so when one had to go out to feed the dogs, very far from the house, they would see the cat hiding in the dark and go crazy.

If one was ever armed with a flashlight you could see it's red eyes glowing in the darkness.

Did I mention it's favorite hobby is to shoulder check your legs at full throttle?

Pure nightmare fuel for my youth.

Recovering from the initial dizziness brought on by the spatial time shift effect, Gus slowly unclenched his paws around his lovely companion's shoulders. "My apologies, mon petit cheri, if I hurt you with my claws. It looks like your employer needs us to recover and extract something...in a can...although he really wasn't clear what it was or why he needed it. I'm assuming he briefed you on it? By the way, did you bring your phone with you? That way we can still communicate using the earpiece. I've missed your voice whispering in my ear these past few days." I snicker.

"Jurassic Park? Hmm, I've heard mention that these ancient reptiles had been resurrected through cloning procedures for some sort of entertainment purpose. For the life of me, I'm not sure why one would want to revive a two-ton behemoth with more teeth than a school of piranha and a worse temper to match. But then, one mammal's poison is another's dessert I always say. I guess this is what I get for asking his help in testing the camouflage effect in the military version of the static suit I've been getting my team to produce. Ah well, a field test isn't good without a field, I always say." grinning like a hyena at my own bad pun, hoping to ease my companion's tension.

Sirse is silent, even for a mute vixen. Her eyes slowly moving over the forest as thought expecting an attack to come from any side, corresponding with her eyes, thise large ears move like radar dishes to follow. A sense of foreboding unease written over her face.

From a hudden pocket on her cut off skirt, Sirse extracts her phone, and begins to rapidly thum out a message. You note that though her eyes are on the screen, bith ears are un constant motion, rotating, hold, listen, rotate, hold, listen.

Her familiar voice appear in your ear again, this time, there is an air of dread to it.

'No.'

'I was not briefed.'

'And neither were you. This is a, test. A field evaluation to see if I will be permitted to continue to be allowed to work with you. Or if your presence will be a liability.'

There is a touch of sadness there, in that last part, before she adds.

'It is good to hear from you as well. It has been, to long.'

Dosser in hand, she curles the paper to her chest, and seems to be making a decision.

'Do not worry, my employer bares you no ill will regarding the incident with the dress. This is diffrent.'

A rustle in thr brush off to your side causes the little fox to freeze. Ears fully alert, you recall seeing the posture before, when you inadvertently started mentioning names of power. That what may be around you is on that same par of concern is disconcerning.

Eyes never wavering, her hand moves in a blur.

'We need to make for higher ground. Safer off the forest floor. Trees would be ideal. Can you climb?'

I nod my head. "Bears are known to climb very well with our claws but let us not stop to discuss my obvious physical attributes," I say as I bend to scoop up the little vixen in my arms eliciting a surprised yelp from her as I place her so she sits straddled across my broad shoulders. I immediately head for the nearest tree. "For now, prudence dictates action rather than words and you'll be safer on me rather than underfoot. Besides, I'd prefer to do the sampling than let another carnivore have you for their meal." I jest.

I quickly scrambled up as high as I could up the nearest tree placing as much distance between ourselves and the unknown danger. My protective instincts were kicking in and I'd be damned if she would be harmed due to my inaction. The tree I had climbed was a very large redwood, well suited to handle our combined weight and once I determined we were high enough to avoid the danger from the ground, I sat on a very sturdy branch and allowed Sirse to climb off my shoulders. Just as she was about to sit beside me, I place her in my lap, crossing my arms around her protectively, trying to shield her from any danger. A low growl issued from my chest and my hackles began to rise as I stared down into the undergrowth, attempting to see or smell the mysterious threat.

With your arms wrapped around her in a protective hug, Sirse silently considers the outcome of those arms crushing her little frame.

'Quiet.'

As you test the air, a faint wift of rotting meat. Around you the forest moves in the wind. Whatever may be out there does not make itself known.

For several long minutes, the forest remains quiet, and then slowly noises begin to return. Birds, small insects, add their voices to the growing background noise.

Letting out a deep breath Sirse taps your arm.

Looking up at you, something plays across her face, concern. Her hands twitch over the folder before her.

'You should see this.'

Opening the folder she leafs to the first page. Attached is a picture of a Barsal shaving cream, a series of gps quardinats. And severl pages of text.

Scanning the documents, she pages she frowns.

'Thirty six hours.'

My head starts to spin, a headache beginning to form. Barsal? Where had I heard that name before and why does it bring a sense of foreboding? Suddenly, in a rush of memories, it comes to me. "Not that wretched thing!" I growl in anger. "What does he want with Pandora's Box? We have enough dinasours on the island that could tear us from limb to limb, what does he need the DNA of more reptiles for? 650 million years of evolution separate civilized mammals and those creatures. Did he not learn from the failures of Hammond?"

Still muttering in anger to myself, wondering what kind of situation I had just landed in, I start to do a mental check of the weapons we had on ourselves. I was acutely aware that we had arrived at the island with just the clothes on our backs and CS did not allow any technology except that which we already had on us. Thanking the deities that my earpiece still worked with her tablet, my checklist came up with a very pitiful total: one large bear with claws, one small fox/Changeling also with claws and unknown powers, a compass, a canteen of water (empty), and some power bars that I always had on myself. That being said, my very first priority was to ensure my companion's safety for the next 36 hours. After that, CS and I were going to have a very long exchange about throwing mammals into dangerous situations like these without even a tank as protection.

I continued holding Sirse in my embrace, breathing in her scent. Strange as it may seem, but her smell calmed my nerves and I needed my wits about me if we were to get out in one piece.

"All right. If I remember correctly, the can was lost somewhere along one of the paths near the dock. Given that the T-Rex paddock is in the middle of the tour guide path, can you estimate how far we are from it?"

Sirse shifts pulling herself up to better press herself into your fur. Fumbling with her tablet, she keys in several more notes. 'There’s more...'

With her off hand she flips the folder to the last page, Extraction sight: three locations are listed, a small side dock on the south side of the island. A helipad near the center of the island, and lastly one further out to sea off the coast by about two miles.

Several markings indicated the helipad with a designation one, the dock with two, and the off shore sight as three. Sirse's eyes flash over the sights once more, and her body coils itself, her eyes narrow. Closing the folder she takes up her tablet.

'At the thirty-six hour mark, the extraction sights will activate, once started, we will have have twelve hours to make it to the second sight, and sit to make it to the last extraction point.'

Drawing in a silent breath, she lets it out and clicks in the last part.

'If we do not make it to one of the extraction locations on time, my employer will consider us dead. No rescue attempt will be made.'

Twisting to be able to look up at you, Sirse rubs her head under your chin, in a comforting gesture. Hands working, fast she clicks out another burst.

'The canister was last seen by the dilophosaurus paddock, there should be a road to the East dock nearby. And, a jeep. If it works it will help immensely.'

Looking out over the forest, Sirse's eyes settled on the peaks rising up due north, twisting she motiones to the south west.

'We need to go that way.'

Nodding my head, I look to where she points. A lot of jungle and not much else. I shake my head. We'd be fools to leave the safety of the tree...but bigger fools if we did not attempt to get to the extraction sites. I look more closely at her map. There was a route we could take, a bit circuitous but we'd be avoiding the swamps as we were not prepared to pull each other out in case we got stuck in mud. Firm ground would be better. I prayed that the Raptors' enclosure was still intact as I didn't want to run into a pack of them. I shudder at the image of six-foot tall piranhas with the intelligence of dolphins. We wouldn't stand a chance if they came after us.

I inhale her scent once more to calm me and release her from my embrace. "I will go down first then you will follow. You are to stay on my shoulders for protection but I will need your superior night vision and smell to keep watch out for any threats. I will try to limit thrashing about so as not to attract attention to ourselves. If the jeep still works, then Ursa, my deity, favours us." I then begin my descent to the jungle floor.

At your request Sirse remains in the tree unt you begin your decent. Half way down, you hear the scratching of little claws and in a tumbling blur Sirse's little form flys past your head, hands grasp your arms as she swings down onto your shoulders.

With one hand secured to your neck, she taps on her tablet. 'C.S. was very clear, I am to ensure your protection, and, retrieve the canister.'

I nod at her with a smile. No words were necessary. We had each other's back. Once we were on the ground, I hoisted her up to my shoulders, advising her to find a comfortable perch. All my senses were on alert, scanning the underbrush for any foreign sound or smell. Seeing or smelling none, I began our trek, following the path of the tour jeeps back towards the entrance where the main building was situated. I kept a lookout for any potential dangers but I knew Sirse was far better equipped with her superior night vision and ability to sense danger through her supernatural abilities. The T-Rex was the least of my worries but still was a potential threat since we were near its paddock. As we neared the towering gates, I prayed that it still remained open.

Despite her early protests if travelling on a well maintained road, where 'Any blind predator' could pick you off, Sirse had conceded the point in the favor of haist.

To bith Sirse's and your own relief the gate stands partially ajar, bold letters declaring: Jurassic Park

Taking an moment, Sirse tugs on your shoulder until you turn around, then holding her camera at arms length snaps a photo. And smiles a knowing smile.

'If we survive, I want to remember.'

Moving deeper down the road, you come across a fork, one path veers upwards at a slight incline. The other leads downwards. With a delicate touch, Sirse gets your attention, pointing at the tire tred marks left in the mud.

Though there are multiple sets, Sirse seems confident as she taps out a message on her tablet.

'It went this way.' Pointing down the road sloping at a shallow decline before snaking out of sight.

Nodding in silence so as not to attract unwanted attention, I make our way down the road, senses on high alert. I see the wreckage left behind by the jeep where it had smashed against the signpost pointing to the docks. I also saw the tread marks indicating that the driver had taken the wrong path, and had driven in the opposite direction, away from the docks. "Not good," I softly muttered under my breath. "The farther away from the extraction point we go, the less comfortable I get." I reach up to caress the leg of my passenger, to get her attention. I silently indicate with my head the direction we had to take to get to the canister and give her a questioning look if she was okay for us to proceed.

If Sirse is uncomfortable with the prospect of venturing into the woods, she hides it well. Giving you hand a reassuring squeeze she surveys the damage, and clicks out a quick message.

'It looks like he lost control of the vehicle, probably due to the extreme weather conditions. He must have been in a hurry to get off the island.' Mulling the possibilities over she adds. 'As should we.'

Carefully, Sirse guides you down the embankment, the stones though overgrown have a almost natural stair like pattern to them, be it for much smaller feet. Following the sound of running water, deposits you at the bottom of a narrow gorge. Surrounded by trees, dense foliage, and mud flows. Something in Sirse's demeanor changes, very softly she taps the side of your head, to get your attention, and motions ahead, and then behind.

The path the land rover took is quite clear now, following the tail of destruction down, you see where it had come to rest, or, the empty space where it should be. From her perch, Sirse scanned the vegetation, nothing, at least that she could see at this elevation. Tapping on her tablet, her voice whispers in you ear. 'It's gone...' A hidden implication hangs in the air, her fingers begin to type out another message, and freeze. Her whole body goes ridged, and her head snaps off to the right.

Ten yards off to your right a flat top road snakes off into the underbrush. From where you are standing you can make out the outline of a tunnel that runs under the embankment, cloaked in shadow. Out of the corner of her eye, Sirse watches as one of those shadows moves.

Overhead, a cloud moves over the sun, and the forest shifts, shadows grow longer, causing them to dance, and in a moment, it is hard to see more than a few feet into the forest.

Unnerved, Sirse, gives your shoulder a double tap, and points to the ground, indicating she wants to be put down.

'We need to find that canister.' She clicks, 'And quickly.' She looks up at the sky, she needn't say more, as it looks like a tropical storm is blowing in quite quickly from the north. Already the foliage begin to rustle in the wind.

Her reactions make me nervous enough to growl, setting my instincts off in a frenzy. I put myself between her and the shadow in the tunnel. "Your life is far more precious to me now. Go! Search for that damn canister! I'll take care of the threat." My mind tries to remember anything I can think of these reptiles but all I can think of is that they're cold-blooded. Adrenaline is coursing through me, all senses on edge as I await for the monster to charge.

Sirse sensing your reluctance to let her out of your protective bubble, gives you a look, a mixture of regret and concern. If it is due to your harshly formed word, or concern for your wellbeing is unclear.

In the shadows a bird like cooing sound echoes. The forest shifts, and the shadows dance. Whatever is out there keeps itself concealed, though for a brief instant, you swear a shadow that seems out of place moves, and is gone in the next gust of wind.

Sirse, now on the ground, begins a quick survey of the environment. Her face close to the muddy earth she tests the air.

Eyes flick over the area nearest the road and she hastily moves to investigate.

Tire tracks, coupled with ruts and...her heart stops. Before her several sets of bird like tracks reside, and amidst them the muddy remnants of a black sweat smelling tar.

Eyes focusing on the tracks, she notices how the majority seem to lead off to the the tunnel Gus was fixated on. Again, the soft hooting sound echoed through the air. With the winds rapidly picking up it was impossible to determine were the noise was coming from.

Changing a look up at the clouds above, Sirse winced, the storm was advancing faster than she had thought. There would be maybe ten minutes, before it hit, maybe less.

The prospect of being caught on a tropical srorm front was not one she liked. Adding the fact that they were stuck in a venom spitting predator paddock only hardened her resolve to work fast.

Thinking fast she reviewed what the file had mentioned about the canister's location, bottum of a hillside, mud, and lots of water, with a possible jeep for escape. Mud and water there she had of plenty, the lack of a jeep though made her leery. Something was wrong, the intelligence her employer had provided was off, but, most intelligence got stale fast. Cursing, she began a sweep of the area.

Further on, a sick tangy smell hung in the air. Drawn to it she pushed into the first few feet of foliage and froze. The sight before her caused her stomach to churn. Despite the warnings, she had not been prepared for the visually horrifying appearance of what was hidden in the undergrowth. Stepping blindly back, Sirse fought down the urge to vomit.

Around the open area the hooting sounds again, closer this time, and more often. Sirse's heart picked up, as she recognized what ahe should have sensed before. Pack hunting, the creatures were surrounding them. The first splatters of rain begin to fall patterning the dense brush.

She could see Gus's apprehension growing, maybe he sensed it too. It was a difficult decision to make, one she knew she had little time to, but was going to have to choose nonetheless.

Looking up to the main road she judged if they could make it. Ahead thunder rumbled, and the dim light became ever darker. A steady stream began to flow down the hillside, water running down... down! Her eyes locked on the mud gathered there, and with the desperation of a fanatic she threw herself onto it, little hands digging.

Nothing...

The hooting rose, several distinct noises, very close now. Swallowing, she turns to look up at you, her face said it all.

I see the shock, disappointment, fear and most of all, the light go from her eyes. I rushed over and grabbed her by her shoulders and shook her, albeit somewhat roughly, but hoping to snap her out her despair. I was not going to just lie down and let some overgrown bird have me or her for dinner, not while we still had her wits about us.

"Sirse! Snap out of it! If the canister isn't there, we need to leave now lest they trap us here. Come!" I order by grabbing her about her waist and make a rush for the main road.

If the raptors encircled us, I knew we didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. Our only hope was to try to make it back to the main building but if I ran on my hind legs only, we would be easily caught. I look at my companion to see she is still in shock. I needed all my paws free so I quickly tear her shirt off her back and cut it into strips using my claws while holding Sirse by the scruff of her neck in my jaws. I mentally apologized to her but if we survived this, I would take whatever punishment she would dole out gladly.

While running, I bind the vixen to my chest so that she faces me and once she is secure, I drop on all fours and channel my primal bear. Hearing the hooting approaching on all sides, I scramble up the embankment all the while roaring out my rage, challenging the beasts to approach if they dared.

Suddenly, what appeared to be s 6-foot turkey blocks my path. With the speed I was going I did not have time to swerve and kept going. I rammed my broad forehead against the creature's chest, crushing its chest cavity with the force of my momentum and flinging it aside. In hindsight, it was a foolish move but probably the reason why it worked was that it wasn't expected. I sense two more of the creatures approaching me from the sides, attempting to attack at the same time. As they near and both rush me from opposite directions, I wait until the last second and do a tuck-and-roll protecting Sirse with my arms. This caused the two attackers to slam into each other, stunning them momentarily but giving me enough time to get back up and continue my race to the main building which was a few hundred feet away through the brush. I hear the rest of the pack behind me which further fuels my fear and manage to make it to the main door of the building and slamming it behind me. I see a small metal pole and quickly grab it, forcing it through the handles and twisting them to form a crude padlock which would give us time to hide and find another solution to the problem at paw.

i enter the control room and repeat the same process of using another metal bar to lock the doors. Gasping for breath, I untie Sirse from my chest where she had not moved since I had picked her up. Seeing that she had only her bra on, I took my shirt off, sliced three fourths of the bottom off and did the same for the sleeves. I then put it on her and tied the tails around her to preserve her modesty.

Sirse still remained unresponsive after all that. I softly patted her cheek with a paw, trying to get her to snap out of her stupor. Seeing that all else had failed, I used my last Ace up my sleeve, hoping it would get a reaction. I bent down and kissed her softly on her lips.

Sirse blinks, as though coming out of a trance. Sense the realization the canister had been lost, taken, stolen, or worse yet maybe even eaten, a horrible series of thoughts had begun to race through her mind.

Dimly she became aware of Gus grabbing her, yelling something. Her mind raced, subconsciously her hand moved to thr black teardrop around her neck.

Was this a test, did her employer truly want her to try and cut loose, knowing the consequences? Had he been the one to take the canister? And if so, the jeep... she could see his smiling face, black eyes sparking with the fsce of someone who knew a secret.

'Webs within webs...' he had been fond of saying.

The sudden violent tug at the back of her neck ripped her from those thought, and for a second she thought it was one of the creatures. Fabric ripped as clawed hands spun her around, her hand nearly ripped the gem from around her neck, her mind focusing on the energy within her - and stopped, Gus, he was cursing as he tore away her shirt.

She was flabbergasted, her mind running circles. Had he lost his mind, had he seen death coming and decided he wanted to take her before the end...

Hand going for her tablet, she, fumbled, huge arms pressed her to a fur covered chest and for a second she couldn't breath.

What was going-

And then he was off, wet ferns slapped her face as her body flashed dangerous close to the muddy ground.

He was running, above the sky broke. He was running on all fours, a torrent of water erupted from the heavens, lashing out as the world became a sea of green.

Changing a look before her, Sirse could see the figure of their hunters moving through the brush. She fumbled for the tablet, but found it stuck between her and the bear she was bound to. Opening her mouth she tried to scream, no sound came out. Beating frantically on his chest did nothing, as a terrible roar split the air, she doubted he even noticed her now.

With a sicken lurch she felt the impact, heard the crunch of bones, and - pain, sharp, white, and blinding exploded over the back of her head. The rest of the world faded into a blur and darkness.

...

Sirse's world began to come back into focus, slowly at first, her eyes cracked open. The pain came before her vision returned, searing over her head and back. Is had nit felt this bad sence tangling with one of thr winter court trolls, and even then it had been... the thought faded.

The rain was not pelting her, nor could she feel the thundering heart of her protector, the crush of his lungs as they expanded, driving the breath from her with each of his own.

Blinking again, the world was a wash of hard shadows and twilight. Gruff hands were pulling on her, crushing her chest again.

Was she dreaming, C.S. had warned her about head wounds, and how particularly dangerous they would be for someone with her unique condition.

Abruptly the world swayed, a thick paw, struck her face. She tried to focus but the motion caused light to flash before her eyes. Another slap, this time she caught the glimpse of a hulking figure before her. A troll? It was big enough... Another slap, and this time she nearly fainted under jackhammer that was working its way through the back of her head. Tears welled in her eyes, as she willed it to stop.

To her surprise, it did.

Warm lips pressed against hers, soft, so very soft. Through the coppery tang that assaulted her nose, a familiar scent was there, deep, robust, and thick with the forest. Focusing on the scent, she let it guide her back.

Eyes focusing, a face moved before her. A familiar face. Tears she had been trying to hold in check boild forth, and she threw her tiny arms around his neck. A big, strong neck, covered in a dense coat of fur, and kissed him with all of her worth.

I sigh in relief, feeling Sirse react to my kiss. As I attempt to pull away, not wanting to seem forward, the little fox pulled me back into the kiss, with more force than I was accustomed to. "Oh, well..." I thought, "in for a pinch..." as I inwardly smile and returned her ardour with a boiling lust of my own. Her tongue was so small yet forceful, finding its way into my mouth with a mind of its own. I try to catch it with my own but it slips away, teasing, like its owner. I gently bring my female companion closer to my chest, allowing her to dictate the kiss. She was like a giant wave that if you tried to fight it, would stomp you down as easily as I could a used soda can. No, a force of nature like Sirse, you rode on top, allowing her to carry me to whatever heights she wanted...that is until I heard the scratching at the door.

I immediately break the liplock and look into her eyes. I smile for I can see she is back with me, the fire and the passion burns deeply in her eyes. "Good to have you back, mon petit cheri, and although I would like to continue our delightful interchange, I fear we have more pressing matters at hand." I indicate with a nod of my head towards the door. "We have company." I whispered. As I looked down at her, I notice blood on her. I quickly check to see if she had been hurt at all. I feel around her head and I noticed some bumps there which may have been brought about when I had avoided the two creatures who tried to intercept me. I must not have protected her head properly as I rolled about or she might have hit her head when I rammed the first one. I chastise myself for not taking better care of her. I check her arms, legs and other body parts. No scars nor any puncture wounds. As I wondered where the source of the blood was coming from, I realize as a drop falls onto her that the source was me. I put a paw to my head and it comes away, wet. The cursed beast must have managed to nick me just as I rammed my head into its chest. I realize. Soon, however, as the adrenaline rush wore off did I feel the burning sensation on my right arm. I look and see three parallel lines indicating where the fur had been torn away but the wounds were not deep. Cursing the deity that had thought up those abominations, I gather what was left of my shirt and create a makeshift bandana for the wound on my head and wrap the rest of the strips around the flesh wound to stem the flow of blood.

Having attended to myself, I attempted to stand up but immediately felt woozy. Blood loss...not good. I think. I sit down on my haunches, my back against one of the consoles. I take stock of the control room and I see that the standby lights are on but the main computer has not properly booted up. I drag myself over to the main screen and tap out a few basic commands. "Sirse, it looks like the computer is just waiting for the correct commands to reboot itself. Are the codes in the dossier that CS gave you?" I ask hopefully.

Visibly shaken, Sirse looks up at you, her eyes trace your arm, to your head. Her brows knit with unspoken concern. Looking like she is about to ignore your request, and look for a medical kit, the scratching on the door stops her. Torn, she finally settles slips into a chair to be on par with the screens beside you.

Paging though the contents of the folder, Sirse's eyes move with honed precision, clearly she is an accustom power reader, as befits her station. After scanning the documents she looks up at you, then down again and shakes her head. Eyes trained on the screen's simple start up menu, Sirse grasped the mouse, and set to trying a navigation through the systems virtual hubs.

Fence control...Feeding programs...Backup power...there, main building, Visitor center, clicking, a popup menu appears, Run: Primary power.

Error: Primary power is off line.

Run: Backup generators. With a slow whirring sound the building's emergency lights flicker, but the room remains dark. The monitors around you remain dark. Again the scratching comes at the door, this time more persistent, accompanying it, is the dull sound of something beating itself against the metal frame.

Confused, Sirse checks the screen again, the system reported main power had been restored to the Visitors center. A touch of irritation crosses her eyes as she looks around at the terminals again. What was wrong? The system had power, it should be rebooting. Looking around for something, perhaps a physical problem, a damaged cable... following the screen over, several sticky notes, lay with notes scribbled on them. Tyrannosaurus feeding program, debug, and other such notes, most seemed to pertain to the care of the animals.

In a flash of insight, Sirse's head snapped back to the screen.

Returning to the main screen, she looked over the blocks once more, and selected Veterinary Sight, Aux Power, Reboot system.

The lights flash, and with a sudden hum of power, the system begins to boot reboot itself. With the sudden intensification of the light, the creatures outside the door shriek. Abruptly the scratching stops, though Sirse looks dubious about opening the door. Looking up at you, she smiles, then points at your arm, her smile turning to that of a scowl.

"It must have happened when I dodged the two creatures who attacked us from the sides. You probably were unconscious at the time. One of them must have managed to nick me as I avoided them. If I was alone I probably would have turned on it in a murderous rage but I had you to protect...and I still do." Wincing as a stab of pain shoots up my arm, I ask her, "these creatures, do they carry poison in their claws, by chance? The wound isn't bleeding as badly but the room...seems...to...be spin..."

Sirse's eyes go from the cut on your head back to your arm, in them you can clearly see her distress.

Gripping her tablet, she punches in a quick series of text.

'There is a strong possibly for poison, infection, and a possible venom from a wound like that.'

Not wasting any time, Sirse motions for you to sit down in the chair she vacates.

Hiw long had it been sence the attack? A brief glance at the clock on her tablet told her more than she wanted to know. To long. Silently she wondered how he was still standing, and eventually attributed it to his body mass, and that he was riding an adrenalin wave that would burst the heart of any other creature.

Not waiting to frighten her protector, she took both hands and applied a little pressure to push him back into the chair. Designed for a much smaller mammal, Sirse was relieved as the chair sagged, but held.

A quick glance at his face told her he was not in good shape, his eyes were dilated, and his body felt warm to her. The smell was the tipping factor, a sweet sickly smell that came from the wound. Upon a closer inspection she could see a thin film forming over the gashes.

Tapping quickly she looked up, wondering how long he could remain conscious. She needed to get him to a medical clinic. Around her, the main doors were now barred to her, but a secondary exit did lead out.

Nit wanting to leave Gus's side she scanned the room, no medical kits. Not in this room anyway. On the far wall there was something of use though, a floor plan, worn and with several red areas scribbled out with hand written words overlayed the printed ones.

There, further across the complex, much further. She was hesitant to try and make it alone, what if the creatures found a way in?

Looking back at the half conscious bear, she winced.

Feeling the aftereffects of the creature's poison, I feverishly rack my brain to think of a way to get us off the island. Our first priority was to get me some sort of antidote but we needed to clear out the creatures out of the building so that Sirse could get to the clinic inside. I see her look at the floor plan with its numerous fire escapes exit marked...fire escapes...fire...alarm! I quickly turn to her.

"Are you able to set off the fire alarm from here? The loud noise may drive them off, giving you enough time to get to the clinic and retrieve an antidote for the poison. If these creatures are avian based, then they will react similarly to birds of our time. But I want you set it off also throughout the whole compound. There is a certain large predator I'd like to invite to our little party," I say with a wry chuckle. "It's a bit of a gamble but if there still is some carcasses of dead mammals in the Veterinary Site, we may be able to attract the smaller predators outside where our guest can have a word or two with them. While they are busy, there should still be vehicles in the garage that we can then use to get away to the extraction sites. I won't be able to go with you but I'll stay in the doorway in case any of them come back. I can use those things over there," motioning towards the padlocked gun rack where several high-powered shotguns were stacked, "to keep them at bay in case they decide to make a return."

I painfully stand and slowly make my way to the gun cabinet by gripping the top of the consoles for support. With a swipe of my large paw, the padlock falls away like melted cheese. I take one of the rifles and quickly load it with the ammunition in the cabinet. I then make my way again slowly, using the rifle as a crutch, ensuring the safety was on in the meantime. Once I am at the door, I reached up to the bent bar holding the doors closed and nod towards Sirse. "Ready? Go!"

Fire alarms! Of course, cursing her slowness for not having thought of it before. Running over to the council she pulled up the systems for the veterinary sight, it took several tries to get to the right file, but she was able to find what she wanted buried in the emergency sub systems.

Activate: Fire alarm systems/activate fire suppression system/run time: set: 20 min.

That would do it, looking at her watch, and then to Gus hobbling over to the gun cabinet she hesitated, debating if she should tell him. The venom was already beginning to move into the later stages, judging my his condition, loss of strength, dizziness. Checking her watch, Sirse shook her head, any other mammal would be dead by now. It must have been his massive body, that and the adrenaline burst that kept him going, but for how long?

She hated the idea of leaving him, even armed, but he was clearly not going to be argued with, and she did not have the time to argue. Setting a secondary timer for twenty minutes, she steeled herself, twenty minutes, ten across the compound to the veterinary clinic, ten back. And if I don't make it back by then, she watched him lurch using the gun to support his weight...

She knew how the venom would affect him, as as he moved a horrible vision played across her mind, strength would be the first to go, visions, leading up to Violet seizures, and - she stopped that though. No, she would be back before then. Determined, she gave Gus her best smile, waited for his signal. Smacking the execute key, she was out the door and running before he finished saying 'Go!'

...

The world outside erupted in an inverse volcano of water and foam. Blaring lights accompanied by the flashes of strobe lights built into the walls and ceiling threatened to overwhelm her senses. Flashes of shadows moved before her, though if they were hostile or merely a side affect of the lights she could not tell.  All around her the floors had turned to a continuous puddle of fire retardant and the redundant water system.

Scolding herself of not having read the full system before activating it Sire pushed on, ears flat against her head. She only hoped that any predators lingering would be as deeply affected by the assault on their senses as she was. Soaked, she dropped to all fours, no one was here to see, to judge her, and ran all out down the hallway towards the animal treatment center.

As I wait in the doorway of the control room, I take stock of my injuries. I feel the poison weaving through my system, slowly eating away at my body's defences, shutting them down, little by little. I feel my toes start to go numb. Not good. Poor circulation is a bad sign. I hope Sirse finds the antidote soon. Else, I will fail in my mission to keep her protected. And Arie may end up in the hands of those monsters. Ah, John Black, even if you had not asked me to protect Sirse, I was going to willingly do so as she has captured my heart.

I feel my heart starting to hammer loudly and I clutch at my chest trying to slow its percussion. Suddenly, underneath my fur, I feel the golden talisman that CS had given me. What was it he said? 'Ah, the talisman, it contains the power to hold the picture inside its frame. That, and it could be used as a focal point, should one have the talent. I would not advise doing such though, Sirse is not one to approve of such arts.'

What did he mean by the power to contain a picture inside a frame? I had not been able to find the latch to open the amulet so I was not able to place Sirse's photo in it. I had meant to ask Sirse about it but we had been too preoccupied staying alive ever since we had landed on the island. Maybe, once we had left, she could explain it to me...if I was still alive. I hold it up to my lips and give it a small kiss. In case I don't make it, I hope Sirse wears around her neck, to remind her of me. I grimace in pain as more of the poison starts to make it's way to my heart.  Have to hold on...I can't disappoint her...not again...

Sirse was running full stride as she came around the first corner, the water covering the smooth finished floors made cornering difficult. Claws shooting out for traction, she skittered across the hall and body checked the wall. Her breath escaped in a whoosh as her little form crumpled.

Got to get up, got to keep going. She checked her watch, five minutes of running through a maze of passages, how much fur-ther… before her at the end of the hall stood a double set of doors marked Lab one.

Jumping to her feet she raced to the doors, and slipped inside. Before her was a mess. Shattered glass and destroyed lab equipment. A quick survey of the room revealed nothing present, not yet anyway, though a pungent sweet stink hung in the air. A smell Sirse recognized, had the dilophosaurus followed them all the way here?

With the lab in pieces, and anything resembling notes torn to shreds there was little to find in the way of notes. Your overthinking thinking it, it would have to be somewhere easily accessible, somewhere open.  The walls were mostly untouched, save for a smear of… her heart froze, she looked away from the mess. Further down the wall, another passageway opened.

A quick check of the timer indicated she still had thirteen minutes.

Exiting the lab, Sirse found herself looking out over a fenced in enclosure the size of half a football field. Something had ripped a hole the size of a bulldozer through the reinforced part of the mesh. Eyes, circling the perimeter, she found what she needed. A large red box, attached to the side of the now contorted pen door.

Jumping down into the enclosure she moved through the foliage to the hole in the paddock, and froze. Less than twenty feet away, a massive head rose, its beady eyes fixing on her.

The T-rex.

From the doorway, I see the massive head of the T-Rex rise in the direction of where Sirse was headed. Something in my gut was telling me she was in danger. We had somehow bonded and I could feel her terror. I scrambled as quickly as I could upright and I reach over to the flare box in the gun cabinet and pull out several sticks. I sling the gun over my shoulder and shove the sticks into my pants and I hobble painfully to the front doors where one of the tour vehicles, by some miracle, remains relatively unscathed. Sure, it didn't have a roof but all four wheels were still intact. With the power restored, the vehicles should be operational once more. I get into it and turn it on. It took about 30 seconds for the system to reboot and by this time, my insides were churning with fear. I drive over to where the T-Rex is standing and I yell out to Sirse.

"SIRSE! IF YOU CAN HEAR ME SEND ME A TEXT! SIRSE!"

Sirse froze, the massive head loomed not fifteen feet way, even is she made a run for the bushes she would have to find a way back up through the enclosure to where the door was. To far, no mater how fast she ran, she was not going to make it that way. Her tongue flicking out to wet her suddenly dry lips, she concentrated on staying absolutely motionless.

The massive head bobbed once, looking directly at her from its kill. A hadrosaur, from the looks of it. Taking another deep breath she steadied herself, it was not really interested in her, more curious than anything, she could see it's little for claws working in the air. It was protecting it's kill, most likely it saw her as a potential scavenger trying to steal from it rather than anything else. All she had to do was-

Behind the rex a pair of headlights erupted from down the road, Sirse recognized it instantly one of the two gas powered land rovers! And then she heard the a familiar voice  booming over the sound of the engine. 'Sirse! If you can hear me send me a text! Sirse!'

Her heart redoubled its efforts to explode form her chest. Before her the Trex lifted its head, jaws spreading in a deafening roar at the intruder come to claim its kill. Dropping to the ground Sirse barley avoided the arcing tail that snapped the air mere inches over her prone form. The ground shook as the beast charged forwards to engage the new threat.

I knew the TRex would be attracted by movement so I deliberately drove the rover towards the beast, honking wildly at it in order to attract its attention away from the vixen. What appeared to be a massive building walking on hind legs with razor sharp teeth suddenly turned and charged towards me...or to its poor eyesight, which was similar to a rhinoceros' vision, another dinosaur. I needed to distract him long enough so that Sirse could get away. I saw her frozen in fear just outside the building. As the monster neared, I jammed the metal toolbox containing the emergency tools against the accelerator and leapt from the jeep to roll away into the underbrush, hidden from its sight. The sound of the crash and the roar of pain from the TRex deafened my ears as the beast turned its rage onto the machine that dared to attack it. It picked up the jeep in its massive jaws and tossed it aside as if it were a child's toy car. As it loped after its 'victim', I somehow managed to stand up and with its back turned to us, I ran on all fours in order to reach her. With its attention diverted, I reach Sirse's side and flip her onto my back. "Hang on!" I say and rush us back into the safety of the Visitors Centre, my heart pounding at my exertions. I managed to reach the control room and bar the door again before blacking out.

Leaves rustled in the canopy overhead, filtering out the worst of the morning light as it crept down to pierce your eyes. All around you the forest dense foliage shirts with the wind, the fronds brushing against and over your body.

A quick inspection reveals your fur is caked in mud, leaves, and small sticks. Your right arm appears to be bandaged with the remnants of clothing, though badly torn and a bit muddy, you recognize what is left of Sirse’s bra strap rigged together to hold the make shift bandage in place.

To your right the foliage rustles and you can hear the breathing of another creature padding down the trail. Leaves waving it draws closer, feeling its way through the underbrush.

Trying to move through the brush quietly was impossible, trying to move while carrying the large leaves she had gathered only magnified the task. As she emerged from the footpath she had worn through the surrounding jungle she let out a small start of surprise. Immediate she drops her leaves and begins to tap out a message.

‘Your awake!’ Running over to your side Sirse wraps her arms around you. 'How do you feel?'

Pushing you back down as you attempt to rise, Sirse fixes you with a look that stops you in your tracks. 'Don't try to move.' She clicks out, not taking her eyes off you. 'You may be a little confused at first...what is the last thing you remember?'

At the mention of Hammond, Sirse hesitates, her eyes focusing on the horizon for a long while before she taps her wrist.

'That is what concerns me. He is not one to forget lessons from history. I suspect, he has other plans for these embryos.'
