Description ‘Slick Nick has whatever you are looking for, all your discrete desires, Nick can provide.’ Nick called out to passing mammals. The Summer carnival was a celebration, or it had meant to be, of tater years there seemed to be fewer and fewer mammals making their way to the rift valley and the shelter it provided. Snow drifts still filtered in from above blanketing every vendor in a light dusting of white. ‘If Nick doesn’t have it, than Slick Nick knows who does.’

It was all true enough, of the fifty vendors that were, now only a dozen remained. That and the character of the festival had change too, and not for the better. As always the festival brought with it those who thought they could profit with a little light fingered luck. Now though, there seemed to be a darker undertone of those in attendance. Hungry eyes flicked over his crates and promised wears. None of them dared to approach him unless to exchange a few words of pleasantries, perhaps even purchase a few articles. Smiling out at the crowd Nick knew he was protected, his name alone was enough to keep most of the petty thieves at bay, still there were always some entreasuring fools.

It then came as a surprise to him as a small hooded figure came up to his stand and placed a gray paw directly on one of his most valued crates of dried meats, leafing through them without any regard. Regaining his composure, Nick did his best to hitch up his smile, while beating down his irritation with the individual. ‘So, can I help you?’

Without looking up from the merchandise, ‘Are you still calling yourself ‘Slick Nick’? Stupid name, for a stupid fox.’

‘Hey, now just wait a moment!’ Nick protested, moving to confront the short offensive mammal, who finally looking up at him with the most brilliant of violet eyes.

‘Judy?’

‘Hello Nick.’

C.S. Notes: I wanted to kick around a little piece from a web comic project I have been working on: Zootopia: Arctic Drift, a darker alternate reality where the planet has entered into a premature ice age before civilization emerged from the iron age. This one takes place before any of the other comic pages, and was created for the purpose of drawing Nick before his decent into madness and the associated tragedies that followed.

Arctic Drift: post-apocalyptic era after a large meteor crashes down on Earth, causing a New Ice Age to ensue. This leads to the breakdown of Mammal Civilization and the return to Darker Times. This incident takes place a year after the meteor crash. Many prey haven’t survived because of the lack of tillable land in order to grow food. The rabbit farmers have managed to continue growing food because of greenhouses and hydroponics but it is limited. The weak perish and the predators use them as a source of food. The survivors still manage to cling to some sort of unspoken agreement that predators will not hunt prey and will only eat those that are already dead. But, this does not last as the old ‘hunger’ returns and many predators are no longer satisfied waiting for prey to die. Some hasten the process. In the end, it is a return to the survival of the fittest.

A very grim and dark world for sure. Perfect to thrust unexpected mammals into. Perhase even a side trip can be made by Gus and Sirse, it would be fun to see how they would have to adapt.

That is quite a side trip. Maybe just after they have managed to escape Arctus Tor and before they go to Hogwarts? Or after the Treasure Planet AU?

Mediorite, all the dust kicked up resulting in a blotting out of the sun and a rapid cooling of the planet. Not a good situation to be in.

That's the kind of thing a civilization doesn't come back from. But the hardiest life forms will survive.

True, at this point civilization has been crumbling and is now devolving into a desperate state. Though there does linger a little hope around the equator, or so rumors say. Not that anyone has ever ventured that far south and lived to tell the tale. The further south you go the more lethal the monsters.

Devolving? Could be they're evolving into something that can survive the harsh conditions, and losing the unnecessary trait of being civilized.

That is an interesting thought... Simplifying things a bit, I created the world with an unsustainable environment to the current population. I wanted to make something that pushed social rules accepted by society to the limit, how far are people willing to go before they break down. In a way it could be considered an evolution to a new environment and social rules.

The world is a big place. There must be some societies that have already fallen and turned feral on each other, and others that survive much longer than usual.

Excellent story.
From the look of Nick I can see the PTSD building.
The strain of survival is wearing him down.

I wonder how he came about that.......meat?

Thank you, he has had a hard time, even when he was running as a merchant working out of the valley. Judy did have a way of helping take his mind off of it though, she had a way of helping him see the best parts in the world. She would even sneak him down into The Burrow, an underground cavern and natural hot springs, that helped him a lot.

Ah, the meat... Have you ever heard of a games series called Fallout? Post apocalyptic game, food is always in short supply, most of it seems to be about 400+ years old and pulled out of vaults. What natural food is out there is hideously mutated and irradiated... Then there is the iguana. Throughout all the games, about seven now I think, you can always find 'Iguana on a Stick, and Iguana Chunks'. Then one day someone pointed out a little fact to me that I had not ever noticed before... In all the play throughs one has ever done, no one has ever run into a single iguana. Da da daaaaa....

If you go way back, you can find a side quest to investigate a shop called 'Iguana Bobs: The Best Iguana in the waste land.' The more you dig into Iguana Bobs, the more you come to realize that something is wrong. In particular, where he is getting his 'iguana' meat. The trail leads you to one of the less shady doctors, and mysterious vanishings.

Oh yeah.
I heard of Fallout.😁
Great game. Teaches one values and be suspicious of certain.......scarce commodities.
My fav was Metro.
Batteries, bullets, air filters were the barter.

Survival pushes one to the edge.
Those that cant hang......fall off.
Then there are folks like me....... I’m jumping!

Metro Last Light was a great game. I loved how you had to ration everything and how your face mask would get spider webs - well loved and hated. 'I can't see! I cant see!!!!' D:

Lol, I would be the guy who is 'giving people a 'helpful push' just because.' Heck, I was under the impression I was immortal until after I was 21. Now it seems that I have to start taking care of myself, as I only have a mortal body now. Shame really.

We all get that way over time.

An old song from the Beach Boys got me to thinking about ones mortality..
Circa 1969 “Take a Load off your feet” from the album Surfs Up.
One line stuck in my head even to this day.
“Better take care of your life cause nobody else will.”
I’m still here.
Still smiling
Still trucking.

That's the spirit! I know I am, the key is to just keep rolling with the punches. That and to not take life to seriously, just enjoy the moment.
