Her lugs burned, and each labored breath was an effort.
No sooner would she fill her lungs than a violent contraction would force the air from her chest in a whooping series of coughs.

Curled up in Nera’s circular bed, Amenii tried to fill her lungs again, this time managing to keep from spasming. Despite the multiple blankets, she still shuddered, her body felt as though it had been plunged into a bucket of ice water.

‘Nera?’ Her voice came out a horas whisper.

Silence.

Nera. She had been here. She was…

Amenii pressed her hands into her eyes, her head felt like someone had stuffed it full of cotton, making it hard to think.

Nera.

Nera had gone to…get something. Medicine? A doctor?

A sudden explosive cough forced the though from her mind as her body reeled forwards. Hacking until it felt her lungs were going to implode, Amenii collapsed back into the bed. A fresh wave of cold sweat rippled through her body, sapping what strength she had left.

‘Nera!’ She had to find Nera.

The single word took effort to form and left her throat raw with the effort.

Think, Amenii willed herself, You need to remember.

Nera. She had gone out.

Gone. Out.

Alone.

The thought tightened in her chest gripping her worse than the sickness that plagued her body.

Alone.

No! No, Amenii chide herself, anger giving her a momentary clarity from the dullness that clouded her mind. Nera wouldn’t do that. She, would have left a way.

With a flash the memory came back, Nera leaning over her, palm pressed against her forehead. She was saying something, but Amenii couldn’t understand the words. Then Nera pressed a small box to her chest, her cell phone.

Cell phone!

Coughing violently Amenii looked around.

Nera had brought her her cell phone.

Scanning the blankets, she looked in vain.
