Half way through this piece I realized that it could be taken two ways: The first, she is wailing in grief because she has been transformed into a snake monster. In her grief she punched the mirror in an attempt to destroy what she sees. Or, two: while learning how to slither in her new body she slipped and banged her head into the mirror, and is crying because her head hurts.
Both seem reasonable explanations, which you see is up to you.
Which do you see?

Something entirely different popped into my head when I looked at this:Β The mirror just spontaneously shattered when she looked into it, and either that alone was enough to set her to sobbing, or she got a piece of glass in her eye.
