Description ‘Sirse.’ Her employer spoke softly, massive hands folded behind on top of his desk. ‘It is good to see you again. I trust everything is well?’

Sirse shifted uneasily under those small black eyes.

‘You have been enjoying yourself I hope. It is good to relax now and again, yes, relax, rest, recover.’ Though his tone remained soft, like a grandfather who appeared almost half asleep, there was something lingering under that voice. A note of sadness that she could not shake. ‘If you are now fully recovered there are several tasks that I could use your and, your mates assistance with.’

A quick glance around the room told her all she needed to know. To any other mammal it would have just looked like a very cluttered office, something that fell out of fashion in the eighteenth century. Gold trim, deep stained wood varnish, covered in portraits of figures that no one seemed to quite recognize who. Shelf upon shelf of books line the walls, large tomes, small journals separated only by the random smatterings of rocks, crystals, and half melted candles.

Yet under the aged rugged look, there were signs of something darker, wearing at the edges. Charred bits of wood scuffed the floor near the door. A strange claw pattern almost hidden under one of the many rugs that covered the floor.

Almost as though sensing her thoughts, her employer rose from his seat.

‘To answer your question, Yes.’ Arms folded behind his back, he looked suddenly older, taxed in some way. ‘It happened again. Which is why I must implore you, do not delay in this next task.’

A sharp rap on the door, stopped what he was about to say next and Sirse innerly flinched. Timing, she would have to teach him timing.

‘Ah, that must be him.’ Her employer smiled, the slump to his shoulders instantly fading. ‘Sirse, the door please.’

As I entered CS' domain, I smiled at my mate who stood at the doorway. I knelt down to greet her with quick smooch as I was sure she didn't want to appear unprofessional before her employer. She looked quite entrancing wearing the short black skirt with a pastel blouse and a black vest over it. I noticed she wore the Black Onyx around her neck, the shiny black orb shimmering in contrast against the pale blue cloth on which it rested. Snickering, I quickly signed to her, "I envy that jewel as it has the chance to rest on your lovely bosom the whole day."

I then turned to the owner of the domicile, the rather extraordinary yet mysterious shark who I had met and forged a friendship with. He had made use of my talents previously on several occasions, sometimes quite profitably for the both of us, but more recently because Sirse and I had become mates and he knew I would not appreciate her being sent away without my tagging along. Which was why he had instructed her to train me in the art of fighting, subterfuge and survival. My mind recalled the phantom aches from the bruising training she had developed for me--which I felt at times she got some sadistic pleasure in doling it out. However, the make-up sessions afterwards in the hot tub were truly well appreciated.

"Greetings, friend CS," as my eye swept over the room. "Have you had some Fire-mages over to help redecorate? Or did you hire Dumbeldorf as your interior decorator?" I joked.

Sirse smiled, fingering the gem as she led you back to the now ornately covered desk and all its brass contraptions. At your comment about the change of scenery of the office a wide smile crosses the sharky maw.

‘Funny you should mention that.’ The shark gins, leaning back in a very worn looking chair. ‘I had a sudden and overwhelming urge to redecorate, and by happy coincidence I was able to acquire the lions share one Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore’s office furnishings. Now deceased sadly.’

Standing by your side, Sirse shifts ever so slightly her tail swaying back and forth altering its angle just enough to smack against your leg, though she gives no indication of noticing or looking your way.

‘It was a funny thing, and I certainly had to invest a great deal into acquiring half the articles here, but in the end it was well worth the investment…’

Sirse’s tail smacks you again, this time with a greater vigor and for a split second her eyes shift from facing her employer, to a shelf that has been set up against the wall. Unremarkable at first glance, the only thing that stands out is the charred wood that it conceals behind it.

‘…Needless to say, funds are a little tight after this acquisition. Fascinating man this Dumbledore, even comparable with the Merlin of old, and the Tecnomages of new. But that is a tale for another day.’ Rocking forwards in the leather bound chair, the shark laced its fingers in a business like manner. ‘Now, I suppose you are curious why I called you here and under such short notice?’

‘Sirse has brought to my attention that you are progressing quite well in the martial arts field. However, in the discipline of magical defense you remain undisciplined. I blame myself for this, as I can not have Sirse teach you the arts, not as you understand them, not without consequences.’  Small beady eyes focus on Sirse, and for a second her tail stops swishing under that penetrating gaze. ‘But, there, are, alternatives.’

From one of the desk drawers, the shark extracts several yellowing files.

‘Lets see…We have, Merlin, the first one mind you. A keen mind that one, a bit limited in his ability to act, as he was an advisor to Arthur, of which I am sure you are familiar.  Curious man he is, but the more I delve into his history the more I am convinced he better fits the classification of Sorcerer, rather than Wizard.’

Pulling the second file out, and studying it intently C.S., Sirse takes the opportunity to swat you with her tail again, and jerk her chin up ever so slightly. A quick glance up reveals the ceiling has been recently repaired, old timbers have been patched, and several of them are missing large chunks.

‘Ah, yes. Mr. – Pardon. Dr. Strange. Sorcerer Supreme. Brilliant mind in his younger years, but of late he has…mhhhh…fallen.’

With an air of displeasure the file is pushed away.

‘And then there is our third candidate.’ Fingers begin to drum against the last file. ‘I usually do not try and sway people one way or the other. But in this case I shall make an exception, as I have several personal investments at stake.’

Cracking the file open and extracting several pictures and a small mound of paperwork.

‘It is my desire to send you to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry.’

"Yes, this Hogwarts you speak of. You did mention this to me before. This was the training ground for the Techno-mages you helped me to hire for the company." Gus spoke while biding his time, taking in the scene that Sirse had attempted to bring subtly to his attention. He noticed the scorched edges around the newly repaired areas and smelt a subtle breath of a scent he had almost forgotten. "Snow Trolls?! Since when were they able to cross into this dimension?"

Sensing that a direct approach was best, Gus addressed CS: "I have but two questions for you, friend CS. One, why all the sudden interest in my becoming more adept in magic? And two, is it because there has been an attempt by the Winter Court against your person? I can see the charred wood around the repair and I can smell the unmistakable scent of those foul creatures from Mab's Personal Guard. Why were they here?"

Fingers drumming, beady black eyes regard you. ‘That’s three.’ A smile spreads up over that sharky face. ‘But, we are not here to play Fey games, to answer your first question it is in your best interest and mine that you learn the basics of magical theory, and how they apply in different worlds. Magic, does not behave as a stable entity, it is fluidic, it changes, adapts, and therefore so must you.’

Easing himself back into his chair, a brief wince of pain crossing the smiling face that causes the steady drum beat of those massive fingers to falter.

‘You and Sirse have formed a bond, and sense Sirse is under my direct protection, that protection also extends to you, and in turn Arie as well. That does not mean that I will always be there though.’ Beady black eyes fix briefly on Sirse, who stands ridged then averts her gaze. ‘And I insist on those who are in my service maintain at least a moderate defensive arsenal to keep them alive in case of emergency. Hogwarts will provide you with a basic understanding of magic, as it operates in their world. And may be similarly used in this one. Or I hope to test this theory.’

‘Now, as for you second question, Winter did come to visit. As I suspected Mab, gentle lady that she is, saw fit to return my ‘lost property’ to me and express her deepest condolences to the inconvenience you may have suffered while in her court.’ One massive hand moving down to touch a tiny class cylinder with a small fire burning inside it. Upon a closer examination, the fire reveals itself to be a red butterfly, flitting around, back and forth in perpetual motion. ‘She wishes for me to pass on her invitation to return some time, and has even set aside a portion of her court to plant two new trees in your honor.’

With a wave of dismissal, the shark eases back into the chair, letting the cushions envelope him.

‘As for the damage you see around you, well, Winter’s emissaries have a way of being hard on the upholstery, especially when some of it is designed to fight back.  But that, is a topic we will have to discuss at a later date. For now, I want your attention focused on the mission at hand: Hogwarts.’

Clearing his throat as though the now apparent damage is nothing more concerning that the change of the weather, the shark spread his arms invitingly to two chairs that have appeared behind you.

‘Please sit.’ Waiting for both of you to sink into your chairs, Sirse crossing one leg over the other at the ankle, gives you a quick glance, and deliberately rests her slender arm on the rest closest to you in invitation. ‘Now, This is not going to be your usual mission, instead of fighting your way thought obstacles, you are going to have to rely on your wits and subterfuge...’

"Hold, friend CS!" Gus interrupted. "I apologize however your words do not make sense. First of all, we three know Mab is far from being a gentle lady and after the losses she suffered at our hands, I'd think she would want my head to adorn a spot above her fireplace. Second, I'll be damned if ever Sirse and I ever set foot in her realm again. We barely escaped with my skin intact. In fact, her Trolls wanted to have me for dinner...and I do not mean in a social way. And third, the last person we saw hanging on a tree in her court was her own Winter Knight being punished for whatever twisted reason she had.

"Now, after our last adventure there, I have found out that you aided Sirse from escaping from the clutches of Mab and that both of you were injured because of that. You have yet to explain why you sent her back there knowing full well that Mab would have locked her up again?

"So, before we begin our journey to Hogwarts, I need to know what's going on. No more subterfuge. No more lies. If you want my full cooperation, come clean with me please!"

‘Very well.’ A small flash of emotion creeps over the calm shark like face, gone in an instant. ‘I shall, as you put it. ‘Come clean.’

Sagging back into his chair, shoulder relaxing as large fingers steeple before him, the shark drew in a deep breath and fixed his gaze on his guests.

‘Mab, is not human. Therefore, you cannot hold her to human standards or expectations.’ C.S. began, taking on the tone as though a professor addressing an important topic in his class. ‘Fey may look humanoid, but they behave in a manner that is exceptionally different than anything mortals know or understand. With that in mind, I must regrettably inform you that Mab, is probably the best of the worst when it comes to the Fey. She is the embodiment of winter, power, will to survive, struggle, cold, and darkness. However, she knows and upholds the laws, and respects the balance of power.’

Eyes focusing on Gus, C.S. raises a single finger as to make a point. ‘So, when I say she is a gentle lady, I mean so in terms of the Fey at large. I assure you, there are far more terrible creatures out there in both the realm of Fey and mortals alike.’

‘That said, her exact message she delivered to me as, reading under the words, was a simple warning that if you are Sirse returned unbidden to her realm, she would extend the same treatment she is currently employing on her knight. A fate I fear that is far worse than any head mounting you would endure.’

Leaning back in his chair and looking pensive then bemused, the shark pressed on. ‘I surmise you are wondering why I sent you to Arctic Tour on such a ‘fool’s errand’?’ A smile touches the corners of the shark like maw.

‘Like all the missions I have sent you on before, this one was to provide you with several important lessons. The first being, for you to learn of Sirse’s history, and her dealings with the winter court, and how she lost her ability to speak at the hands of the Fey. You may not have noted, but the path you took to escape was near identical to the challenge set forth by Mab in order for Sirse to win her freedom.’

‘Also, I needed see how you would perform when faced with an old opponent from your past, and how you would react to Fey politics. I assure you, the courts will be talking about incident for years to come.’

On that note, C.S. leans forwards, beetle black eyes intensifying.

‘You, I hope see the value of uncovering these memories. They are key to you and Sirse better understanding each other and are the foundation for mutual trust. Trust that I must again call upon from both of you.’

‘Sirse and I have worked together in the past, so she is aware I do not like to explain my plans before the fact, as doing can lead to the compromise of a mission. But if you need reassurances I will provide you with what that now.’

Relaxing in his old office chair, the intensity fades, replaced by a neutral mask of caution.

'And Now, you know. I hope that his serves to remove any mistrust there may have formed between us.'

"Mistrust? No, never." Gus grinned sardonically at the shark. "Cautious? Yes. You tend to keep secrets close to your chest which then cause complications down the road for Sirse and me. But, given the nature of your business, I cannot fault you for doing so. For now, I agree with you that I need to be able to protect the ones that I love against those that wish us ill. Even those with magical fey powers," he hinted darkly as he grasped Sirse's paw in his. "I have no plans in returning to Mab's domain anytime soon...unless there is a very urgent reason for us to do so?" he asked.

"Anyway, I also need you help with a new issue that has recently cropped up. Ever since the Arctus Tor mission, where old memories came back along with having come into contact with old magical items that once belonged to me in my recent life, I've started to exhibit some sort of magical power. I had to abandon the sword, shield and mail when we came back from Mab's territory but the power seems to be developing from within and presents itself when I am under...emotional stress." he said, blushing as he did. "This Hogwarts school may be the best way for me to get a handle on this fledgling power.

"Now, I'm curious. I've spoken to the Techno-mages that I had hired with your help. They mentioned that the place seemed to be a melting pot from other dimensions and not just ours. And the teachers were mostly--what were they called? Ah, yes. Humans. There were also the assortment of faeries, sprites, elves, goblins, trolls, mages, wizards, witches and warlocks along with mystical creatures like griffins, centaurs, and dragons. How will we be able to blend into an environment like that? I don't think that there are too many walking and talking mammals like us." as he pointed to himself and Sirse.

‘Complications?’ C.S. arched a bow. ‘Or challenges?’

Smiling a knowing smile, C.S. nodded at the mention of the Winter Courts home ground, and waved a dismissive hand in response to the question. ‘There shall be no need to return to Arctus Tor, not for some time I would hope. As for your weapons and armor.’

With a subtle shift, C.S. reached over to the side of his desk and produced a large browed sword, a sizeable mail shirt, and a matching shield with a reared bear emblem inscribed on its face. Setting them on clear display on the table before him, C.S. smiled a shark like grin.

‘Are these the articles you speak where speaking of?’ Then pressing on before the question could be answered. ‘I took the liberty of having those items secured, as it would not do to have them left out in the elements, in particular Arctus Tor for other inhabitants to locate.’

Pressing on as though nothing has happened, C.S. leaned back in his chair. ‘So, you have manifesting powers that you cannot explain. I see.’ Fingers steepling, and you feel these powers come when you are feeling strong emotions.’

His eyes go to Sirse, who, stands cool and ridged as though nothing of that is amiss. Her only reaction is to arch a single brow in acknowledgment.

‘I see.’ Fingers come undone as he places his massive hands on the desk to begin to drum away. ‘Curious.’

‘Well then.’ C.S. adds after a moment’s thought. ‘I suspect that this Hogwarts will do you some good. Or it is at least my hope that it will grant you some way to harness and channel your budding abilities. I must caution you though, the Hogwarts I am sending you to, is the Hogwarts of a distant past. Yes, it is a place of magical creatures, and yes, there are those from other worlds who travel there.’

‘But,’ C.S. holds up a warning finger. ‘But, that is a Hogwarts of a different age. The one I am sending you to, will be a much more, troubled, Hogwarts.’

Pushing aside the pile of mail and armor to open the dosser and spread out several documents C.S. begins to point out several notes in turn.

‘The Hogwarts I wish to send you to, takes place just before, and during the Harry Potter continuum, regarded by some as the Dark Years, this takes place during the reign of one Lord Voldemort in his later years.’ Tapping a moving photograph from a new article featuring the floating picture of a scull with a serpent twisting out of its mouth, the caption reads: Dark Mark Spotted Over London. ‘You will be entering into Hogwarts slightly before Voldemort’s fall, and with luck you will be able to accomplish the objectives without incident.’

‘As for being an interdimensional hot spot, there are several barriers you will need to overcome, one, remember that this is a double stacked world. The world of Muggles, non magical folk, and wizards, one side knowing of the other’s existence, the other operates in ignorance.’ Fingers stop drumming. ‘That alone should be warning enough about how this world operates.’

To drive home the point, C.S. shuffles though some of the pages, and at last extracts the one he wants. A small stack of clippings featuring a seal with the words: Ministry of Magic Official Degree #. A quick look over their titles feature, Control for Near Human Creatures, House Elf Rights, Goblin Rebellion Crushed, Giant Territory Reduction, Limitations of Werewolf Employment, Restriction of… The list goes on and on and with it C.S.’s expression becomes grimmer.

‘As you can see. The world I am sending you to is highly xenophobic.’ Frowning, he sweeps the articles aside. ‘They fear anything non-human, and regard any other creature as lesser beings. As such, if you and Sirse were to walk in with your fur showing, you would be pegged as sub-humans and probably attacked on sight. If you are exceptionally lucky, you would be able to pass as being afflicted by a potion gone wrong, or perhaps a hex of some sort. Fortunately, there are ways around that problem...’

Trailing off, C.S. massages his brow, as though warding off a sudden headache.

‘Magic.’ He mutters under his breath.

"Now correct me if I'm wrong. You want to use the magical equivalent of my camouflaging technology where we will appear to be ordinary magical citizens of Hogwarts? We will look like...humans?" he asked incredulously. "But, a magic potion  does not last long...unless...we merge the magic with a crystals to keep the disguise going. We could have them in a form of a pendant or belt to wear so that it won't be conspicuous. But won't the Headmaster or the other wizards be aware that we are using magic?"

For a second, C.S. fixed his gaze on the bear across the desk, looking at Gus as though he had just uttered some sort of random gibberish that, though amusing, made little logical sense. Then, with a small nod, he laughed, raising a hand to stall any questions.

‘Please, let me explain.’ Then pausing, a look of bemused concentration flitted across the shark like face. ‘How to explain this, there are several variables, but to keep it simple you must first understand that everyone in the dimension that Hogwarts exists is crazy.’

Silence.

C.S. let that hang in the air for several long heartbeats, before continuing. ‘Yes, crazy. The problem, simply put is magic. The wizarding community has become so entrenched in magic, or more precisely magical dependence, that they have lost all ability to function without it. Down to the most primitive survival skills, that you or I would consider so simple that they would not even require thought. Yes, it is that bad.’

‘Magic, also breeds a sort of madness, a mental instability that if not checked fuels the ego, and turns same men into mad raving beasts. You will find that very little common sense actually applies to the Hogwarts school, or even the wizarding government at large. The entire system is rather horrifying the more one looks at it. Hence, why anything that comes from this era in the time line is labeled a level seven hazard planet.’ C.S. sank back into his chair, taking a moment to mull over Gus’s and Sirse’s expression. Sirse, keeping her face a cool mask, and Gus, looking as though he has just been invited to swim though a lake full of tarantulas. ‘I can see you are just thrilled by this prospect.’

‘But, please. Let me continue. Yes, your attendance and education is required, for your health and safety as well as Sirse’s. If you lose control, and you will if you are not trained, how much damage will you cause, and to who?’

Letting that sink in, C.S. pushed on.

‘Now, you must not be caught. To help you there, I have two rare articles pulled from Jade itself.’ Extracting from his desk two small triangular glass talismans, each with an eye etched into the surface of the glass. ‘These are Blinds Eyes, when worn, none will be able to detect your true selves, not even the most powerful mage can ‘see’ you as you truly are. Not unless you wish to be seen.’
