Description Some artists can be a little shy when it comes to shading. That's perfectly normal, especially when it comes to programs without layers, such as Microsoft Paint. While slight shading can look fine, a good shadow can really solidify an object or character. Now, there are plenty of approaches to this, but here's one that is simple, clean, and relatively painless.

Β First step is picking a color. Look at your piece and think to yourself "What would look nice?" or, if there is a comprehensive background, "what is the appropriate shadow color for this setting?" If this doesn't help, just grab whichever color you like, apply it to the drawing with the marker tool, undo, and repeat this process until you find one that looks good with the drawing.

The next step is picking the value and saturation of the color. I would recommend always using a high saturation for this method, but the value is where things get interesting. The farther from the center of the value bar, the less saturated the shading will be. Having extremely high saturation from the get-go will balance this out and give you access to darker shading without much fear of extreme color loss.

For this example, I went pretty low on the value scale for one big reason. The darker the color, the less details that need to be fixed. Any color darker than your shading will become lighter afterwards, so you need to prepare to replace said colors after the entire shading process is over.

The third step (second image) is to use the marker tool and shade in long strokes across the drawing. Try to avoid overlapping the lines or leaving space between the lines. This will, of course, happen anyways so don't stress out over it too much. Just try to make sure neither the gaps or overlapping portion, referred to here as the seams, land on very detailed areas.

Lastly, (third image) use the eyedropper to grab the now-shaded colors. With whichever tool, use these new colors to hide the seams and gaps. Congratulations! Your drawing is now shaded.

(Fourth Image) Bonus: Add a bit of dim, saturated lighting to the shaded portion to liven up the character a tad more. Darken lines if needed.

It's judging you for everything you have done, and for the things you have yet to do.

idk it’s just really cool to see people finding all the hidden features in paint here’s my thing about it, it’s a bit old so excuse like everything about it lol

sometimes i would get lazy and instead of choosing colors myself like usual i would just take a rectangle, set β€œfill” to β€œmarker” and turn of outline; then just cover the whole thing in the shape and bam that my multiply layer

woahhh this is exactly what i do sometimes to save time??
that’s very shookening heh
ig as someone who uses this technique pretty often (i always called it β€œms paint multiply layers”), i’d just say that sometimes it can be too dark- unrealistically dark.

MS Paint Multiply Layers is a great name for it---it really is just a sorta muddier version of a multiply layer.Β
I feel like it's a method that more experienced ms painters are aware of, and something that newer artists might not think to do (thus why so much Paint art lacks shading.)

yeah u rite;; i still don’t use it very often because i like the freedom of choosing your own shading colors

The fact this is literally just MSPaint is MIND BOGGLING to me.
I mean, I've done similar thing in this program I use called Paint.Net, being a raster/pixel program, but it has layers I can use to make effects like this work. You? Just- Straight MSPaint. What the hell.

I appreciate it!Β  I very quickly gravitated towards the Marker tool and, if I'm not mistaken, painted the cat blob entirely using it (with the aid of the eraser tool for cleanup.)Β  The opacity and only slight distortion of value makes the marker very good for color blending, shading, and lighting. I can't imagine using Paint without it...

actually that sounds like an interesting challenge.Β Β

Ooof, that would be one heck of a challenge...
I imagine you'd basically have to treat it like a pen and ink illustration, crosshatching for values and color blending. Be a pain in the rear, but I don't doubt it would probably look wicked as heck.

This might sound strange, but I often find it to be far more enjoyable to draw in Paint than other art programs like Alpaca and Photoshop. There's a sort of freedom that comes from not having to worry too much about line quality or rendering since it's Microsoft Paint and nobody expected that stuff to be the highest quality to begin with.Β  While things can turn out looking great, I think the appeal to Paint is just having fun with drawing and not worrying about the result.

I definitely recommend giving it a go!
