Description
For a projects1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Eā¦
"Chains are colonies of individuals derived from a single zygote, the main characteristic of this group is the branching stalk that connects them directly.
Through this stalk nutrients is shared and the overall colony is strengthened. The majority of Chains have clearly segmented stalks with a gas layer to make it lighter, though exceptions to both exist.
If an individual becomes damaged or sickly it may drop off from the stalk, only their perch remaining to mark where they once were.
Individuals have two opposing spinnerets, however they may occur as a false pair via migration across the body. Balloons typically contain three membranes, though this is not a strict rule.
Because of their large stalks and smaller individual size most species of Chain grow across the ground with individuals raised only minorly (relative to the colonial size) in the air if at all, or grow against a brace.
"Of course some species of large individuals are able to pull themselves up against their colonial weight and can form complex 3-dimensional structures.
