Yes, they do give off an odor that lingers. Often you can be eating berries and taste and smell the scent.Β The adults and nymphs have glands on the underside of their body. They discharge large amounts of a pungent liquid when disturbed. The liquid will get on the berries when they are feeding, and it dries on the berries. It isn't really discouraging to us, however it is a very recognisable taste once you know what it is.

The brown ones are invasive.Β  Especially when they're invading my bedroom all winter...Β  lol!Β  Are these green ones native?

They are native to the US, and more common east of the Rocky Mountains. Although there have been reports of them being found in Pakistan now.
