Metroidvania was an often used term to describe a game with a certain fusion of action adventuring with collectable power-ups utilizing RPG elements. Since RPG elements have become ubiquitous, the use of the term has been rightfully put to pasture. Pie and I were reminiscing about what made this style of game great and the quintessential examples the term stemmed from, Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
