Description
Yay, a new Metroid-comic!Samus usually starts out with no power-ups. Why does she do that? Sometimes it makes sense i ex: Metroid Fusion.
But mostly it's just like if...
This comic is probably answering that question. Enjoy!
And if you can't figure it out, square 2-4 takes place in the beginning of Super Metroid.
Sketched and edited in Photoshop CS2.

This explains too much.
"Okay Samus, sure you forgot to check Ridley's body to see if he was actually dead...again...what are the chances that he come back once more?"

Not for Samus though.

Yeah, Samus starting without powerups makes no sense.
They should really offer an ingame explanation. Like needing authorization to use them or something.

They did that with Metroid: Other M.
It was handled very poorely though.

I like that ridley is pointing the metroid as if saying: Oh, I'm just gonna take this metroid and be on my way.

Heh yes, something like that. Or maybe this:
"Hey, look what i found on the ground, while just randomly passing by. You know what, finder's keepers!"

Well done indeed. I especially like the Ridley implementation and how true to the game it is. The style really helps to depict him. Its not overally detailed but accurate and complete. The same goes for the Samus block. You've done a great job of keeping things proportionate both within Samus and in the environment around her. The heavier black lines really accentuate this style and help bring out a true Metroid feel. The lighting is in all the right spots without over doing it. The color difference between the cell shaded parts and the non cell shaded parts is also very well thought out as to not over power or take over. It really does just accentuate. Im slightly concerned about the perspective on the ship and the degree of the angle of the wrap around back part. The ship front window seems at a different angle. That aside and overall, this piece is very well done and deserves much praise.

Oh, that's quite some extensive feedback there.
Thanks for the positive response!
I looked up some image of the gunship I don't recall on the internet in attempt to catch the angle correctly, but I guess there's always room for mistakes anyway.

We should thank Samus rushing so that we can enjoy some form of difficulty for 70% of the game.
The space pirates thank her as well. They don't like being curb-stomped.

this explains so much. Not only does she start every mission with no power ups, but she has to re-explore areas from previous games and space stations she's visited as if they're brand new to her

Sol-Zephyr In reply to ukulele-hatter [2011-11-10 12:01:27 +0000 UTC]
I didn't think of it that she forget things for hitting her head.
But yeah, Super Metroid is slightly different from Metroid/Zero Mission.
Either the space pirates rebuilt it on a bigger scale, the environments change over time or Samus just has crappy memory.

I've got it. They're abandonware.
Okay, so the suit "parts" are really just bits of software, right? For example, you can download a missile launcher from a Federation server in Fusion. Well, the Chozo parts are shareware. They're designed to work for 30 cycles, then you have to pay money to register them. Problem is, the registration system is long gone, probably on one of the first Chozo worlds to fall to the Space Pirates. So unless she can find or write a software crack, all her old upgrades are useless.

Or maybe Mother Brain handled the registrations.
Might have been a bad idea to give an AI such authority.

With a light-geared Samus for ONCE, I wonder why Ridley decides to leave the real battle for later when you're more prepared...

It could be a perfect theory, along with the other that says Chozo tech has a limited battery life/memory storage/equipment management capability, so that even the fully upgraded Power Suit cannot hold gizmos for more than 24h: that would also justify the strive to complete the mission at hand in the shortest time possible.

Sol-Zephyr In reply to Daenorius [2011-02-06 16:25:01 +0000 UTC]
The thing with a limited time-usage sounds a little off considering the artifacts has been lying around for what is presumed a long time.
Even discerning this, the limitation isn't very practical.

Maybe you're billed the more gadgets she brings, so everyone skimps out on the bill asking for the bare minimum.

Samus is billed for doing missions which where she would get pay?
Why would you have to pay to do work?
Or I just misinterpreted it for the opposite.

I always loved this comic, but now that I finally got Super Metroid on virtual console, well, the nit picking nerd in me can't help but bring up that the space station she got the distress call from was in the asteroid belt, in our own solar system...Meh, I can just rationalize the "5 million light years" as an expression.
π: 0 β©: 1
Sol-Zephyr In reply to Wakeangel2001 [2010-12-13 12:43:03 +0000 UTC]
It's just an expression that it's a long way to travel.
Otherwise that would be an extreme distance maybe not even able to travel in a life time. But on the contrary, how far away is Zebes?
Some games in the series show some sort of warp-drive tech I believe.

well I know that the next major spiral galaxy, Andromeda, is only about one million light years away. But then I'm reminded of the modern day equivalent of that phrase "forget it, that's a million miles from here" when that distance is nearly 4 times farther away than the moon (that's where 2 of the Lagrange points are) We throw the word "million" around too much.

I think I know why she does that. she is an agile fighter, but alas, she cant be hopped up on power ups. he need at least a minimal of power ups for fieldwork to keep the weight off her shoulders. I beleive that every time she finishes a mission, she tuns in any picked up equipment to the federation. this is her default equipment that she usually starts with:
older games: power suit, power beam, morph ball, high jump, 10 missles
newer games: varia suit, power beam, grapple beam, high jump, morph ball, morph ball bomb, 15 missles
