Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Okay, you asked for it...

The overall impact is very good. For me, the first "catch" was the colour and bright, jolly mood. The image is very well balanced, the bird's awareness is reflected by his (hers?) stance. The plentiness of room on the left leaves enough air and emphasis to the stare. I don't read bird's body language well, but I suspect he (she) is a bit anxious and tries to work out whether the thing he (she) sees is dangerous or delicious—by the high-held beak (second worst weapon after the talons) suggests no mercy and no fear. The target is far, the bird is not in actual danger—this is shown by the masterly provided space.

Important visual element in the overall impact is the depth of field (DoF). It keeps the observer's focus on the bird, while the soft foreground and background informs about the territory. Image softness suggests a great lens, perhaps an EF 70–200 f 1:2.8 L, by the beautiful round and soft bokeh. (Note a slight front focus deviation which remains controlled: the apex of focus field is a bit in front of the bird, about on the strand of grass which points to the left shoulder.)

The whole image is a little bit over-exposured. In this case it helps to "detach" the bird from the background, ensures the three-dimensional appearance, and even lightens the mood of the field. The biggest problem with this image is the fact that I cannot shoot a picture like this. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

You read the body language of this Kite quite well; it is being very edgy and waiting for its falconer to throw the food in the air so it can catch it in mid-air.

You are right; I did indeed take this with a 70–200 f 1:2.8 L. I love the lens, it is awesome. And yeah, I have been practicing trying to get the focus just right.

I found that getting as low to the ground as possible to take photograph of birds helps a lot to get the foreground and background like this. But you look stupid doing it, as you have to lie on the ground with your camera in front of you, with your neck awkwardly twisted to look into the view finder, unless you have a tripod that can go very low to the ground.

Thank you for the critique, nicely written and you are one of the first who has covered the technical aspects of one of my photographs.

Wow, that's for those glasses, they are so perfect that one can even recognize them by the picture I have the smaller brother f 1:4 L IS USM, and while I prefer the crispy sharpness of that one, I always admired the bigger tube's bokeh and ability to use AF with tje 2× extender

I think this minor focus shift is rather a communication problem between body and lenses, and for your lens it is pretty acceptable (it was just interesting to get the mark of such a small deviance). My 7D with the same lens on 200 mm gives a bigger difference, and sometimes needs correction. That's a hell until you get the practice...

For low angle photos, it is always strange for bystanders Some friends just make jokes on me, 'cos I often use this technique even in strange situations, like on the middle of a road (with very low traffic). (As for the viewfinder, if I can place the bottom of the camera on a solid surface, I prefer live view for these shots...)

Thank you, and I always try to catch technical details because always learn from them And thanks once again for that picture!

I try and use the 1.4x extender more than the 2.0x for moving subjects, because it does not slow down the focusing like the 2.0x. But for still objects, I use the 2.0x, because then you get that nice soft, washed out bokeh in the background.

I wanted to try and get the mark on the face and visible eye, but the head was a bit too far up and I would have missed the shot since the Kite took off right after this shot. Yeah, practicing to get it just right every time is a pain, but it is worth it.

Indeed, but I find it funny, because they look at you as if you are mad. I try not to use the live view, but it is so hard not to when you are on the ground.

You are welcome, same here; I still have a lot to learn about the technical aspects of photography.

Makes me wonder: What does a raptor think of Aeroplanes?

I love how the ground immediately around the predator is crisp and clear. I can practicly feel the crunchiness of the sun-dried weeds and browning grass, which kicks the oilfactory senses off on their own memory excursion.

Thank you for sharing.

Good question, I think by now they would be use to it. But they must think something when they see one for the first time.

I am glad you like it and you are welcome.

good shot
loved f2.8 blured backround at 200
simple composition keeps your eye at subject
colors also defines edges of subjet
I prefer 16:9 ratio cinematic crop for this but this better print crop

keep these coming

Same, it blurs even better when you use an extender, but then some of the quality is lost. I was thinking about doing the same, but then I noticed it would destroy the background and foreground blur.
