Update:
I took a better photograph of the drawing and added the critique option. This drawing was very hard to photograph as the background is so shiny due to the thick layer of graphite.

Arxcis, one of the main characters for my fan fan fiction; Wings of Steel needed some clarification on what he looks like. Although, take note that Arxcis does not lose his eye until later on in my fan fiction. Wings of Steel can be read here: [link]

Programs:
Lightroom 3.4 and Photoshop CS5.

Tools:
28 x 21.5cm Sketch pad papaer.
HB 0.3mm and 0.7 Mechanical pencils.

Size/File:
6.68 MBs, 3,430 x 4,481, 300 dpi, JPEG file.

This is an incredible drawing. Did you do it from a reference? You have so many small details drawn so realistically--the feathers, the markings on his wings--very lovely work! I love the sharp contrast between the background and the white of the moon and owl. It makes for a striking composition. The eye patch and sidelong gaze also add a great deal of expression to the owl's face. However, the talons don't appear to have been drawn as carefully. They lack a lot of definition compared to the details drawn in the rest of the picture. Overall, I think you did very well, though.

Yes, I used multiple references, ones for the face, the body, the wings and such, but most of all, I use the taxidermy Barn Owl I have in a glass case next to my monitor on my desk. Β

I do struggle with drawing owl feet, which is something I am looking to improve. Although, in this drawing, the owl is wearing battle claws.Β

Thank you for the critique.

Cool!Β Yes, I saw the laces on the feet, but the bottom half of the talons were where the detail began to wane.Β  All in all, very impressive work!

Giving a brief look over your gallery...it seems that you're intrigued with owls. I did an owl drawing during junior year of high school myself actually...and once upon a time birds were a subject that I liked a lot due to the album covers I exposed myself to at the time. xD

Now...after having glanced at some of your other drawings...I can make the assumption that you know what you're doing. You really nailed all the different values and tones and the use of different kinds of pencils really went well and helped create a successful final product. It takes skill to make a transition between a dark tone to a lighter tone and you've done that with this drawing skillfully. It also looks like the owl is wearing an eye-patch which is a nice touch as well. ^^

It seems like you're a very well-rounded individual with skills in photography...digital art...and now traditional art! Keep at it.

Oh, by album covers do you mean albums such as this one?Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_…

Yeps, he's name is Arxcis and he is indeed wearing an eye patch. He had to wear it after he invaded the islanders (The Zerphys) with his division, they attacked back, then he killed one to set an example, and so then the islanders tore out his eye for it. He is one of my OCs.

Also, thank you! I am glad you like my work and thank you for critiquing this one. I will do the same to the ones you have posted on the thread soon.Β

I love the texture of the feathers, he looks so fluffy and soft. It truly gives an air of realism and I like that about all your artworks.

Usually I use a lot of pen to make the soil black background, then I out charcoal over it to make the strong contrasting black and white.
