Description
A sprite of one of the S&M's last engine classes, the 21 type.
  In 1874, the S&M's Nos. 4 and 5 were worn out, especially No. 4, which had been damaged in an accident a year prior. A new engine from Dubs & Co. was ordered, and arrived that year, replacing the old No. 4, which had operated since the railway's opening. However, the Dubs tank engine didn't perform as well as they hoped, and was sold to the TK&F in 1890 to become their No. 5.
  No. 5 had completely clocked out by then, and it was apparent that they needed a new, bigger type of engine to replace the two old ones. The railway ordered two 4-4-0 tender engines from Beyer Peacock & Co., and they arrived early the next year. The two operated as mixed traffic engines for many years, until No. 22 suffered a burst cylinder in 1915. The railway had had money problems for quite some time, so the engine was scrapped for spares to save money.
  No. 21 survived into the grouping, and became NWR No. 205. It ran for decades, running passenger trains on the Kirk Ronan Branch until 1946, when it was withdrawn as surplus to requirement. The engine was sent to Barry Scrapyard, and like many engines there, was found and preserved.
  It briefly operated on the Severn Valley Railway from 1971 to 1978, but was then selected to become part of the National Collection at Vicarstown. It stays there to this day, regularly pulling rail tours, and occasionally visits its old home at the Severn Valley.
