Description     A sprite of the LNER's largest engine, the R1s and R2s.
   FAKE LORE
In 1936, a new 4-8-2 "Mountain" design engine was built by Sir Nigel Gresley at Doncaster. It was numbered after the pre-existing LNER P2s. The first was No. 2007. Gresley planned to name the engine Queen Victoria, but the men at the works named it after its designer. The design proved successful, and an order of 5 new members was made. No. 2008 was given the planned name of 2007, and the rest were named after the English counties. Then, a massive order of 30 R1s was made. The county names continued for the rest of the engines. The 30 engines were built between 1938 and 39, and before they were even finished, another order of 14 was planned for 1940.
Except, of course, World War II started in August 1939, and while the order of 30 was finished, the order of 14 were already being produced. When Gresley died in 1941, the paused construction of Nos. 2043-56 was continued by order of the LNER's new CME, Edward Thompson. However, these 14 would be built without the streamlined casing. These engines were re-classified as R2s, and were named after important wartime figures of the time. They were finished by 1943, and the 40 'Mountains' ran into BR days.
The R1s would be re-numbered to 62007-62042, and the R2s to 62043-62056. All would run until 1968, when steam ended in BR. Of the forty built, only four survive. Nos. 2007 - Sir Nigel Gresley and 2008 - Queen Victoria are preserved at the NRM, 62013 - County of Essex is preserved by the 62013 Trust and runs mainline railtours, and the only surviving R2, 2054 - Viscount Gort is at the NYMR, currently awaiting overhaul.

Sprite modified from  NightZHowler's I1s

Edit: Turns out there's more than enough historic counties to name all 34 R1s.
