Description
A sprite of the North Western Railway's 4 class, nicknamed the Woolworths. In 1919, eight SECR Maunsell SECR N Class Mogul 'kits' were purchased by the brand-new NWR. Of the eight purchased, three were built into the T4s, and the other five were built into the Class Fours. These were 2-6-0 moguls, originally fitted with excess ROD tenders. The class Fours proved to be extremely successful, and became the standard mixed-traffic engine for the NWR. The first five were numbered 402-406, and were named after historical Sudrian figures, with the exception of number 402 Richard, who was the only sentient 4 class built. In 1935, another batch of 5 class Fours were built, and were numbered 415-419 to help solve a locomotive crisis. The second batch was built with LMS Fowler tenders, as part of the improving relationship with the LMS. The first batch was re-fitted with Fowler tenders at the same time. The 10 Class Fours proved to be reliable, and all 10 ran until 1956, when number 406 'King Orry' was withdrawn and scrapped after a severe accident. The rest survived into late BR, until 403-405 were withdrawn and scrapped in 1965, and 415-419 were withdrawn at the end of steam 1968. Richard is the only surviving member.
