Description A sprite of the NWR's premier mixed-traffic engine, the Class 5. In 1935, the NWR purchased two LMS Black 5s to act as heavy-mixed traffic engines. However, North Western's goods traffic drastically expanded, and the railway couldn't afford licensing the construction of another railway's engines. As a result, the Class 5 was designed as an expanded version of their pre-existing Class 4. The first member of the class, No. 505 was named Charles Henry Norramby after the current Duke of Sodor in 1936. It had slightly larger driving wheels, and had many parts shared with the Class 4. 10 were built in 1936-1937, and proved a reliable alternative to the Black 5. Another 10 were ordered in 1939, but were delayed until 1941 due to the war. Another 5 were ordered by the War Department and built in 1943. Finally, another 5 were built with experimental Stephenson valve gear in 1946. Of the 30 built, only No. 505, No. 515 & 516, and No. 526 survive.
No. 505-514 were the original batch. No. 515-524 were the second batch. WD. 505-514 were the WD batch, and were renumbered to NWR 530-534. No. 525-529 were the Stephenson batch.
Edit: Swapped tenders to a different NWR type
