Description A sprite of the North Western Railway's T4x class, nicknamed the Triple Tanks. In 1919, eight SECR Maunsell SECR N Class Mogul 'kits' were purchased by the brand-new NWR.
Three were built into the T4s, which proved to be strong, but they had an insufficient coal capacity, and were limited to branch-line work. Three years later, five more kits were purchased and built into a modified version of the T4s, the T4x's. These were identical to the T4s in front of the cab, but behind the cab, the bunker was greatly expanded to improve the engine's coal capacity. A small water tank was added to the bottom of the bunker, which gave it the nickname of the Triple Tanks. The first batch, numbered 410-414 were built in 1924 and proved extremely useful, and could easily go across over 50 miles without refueling. In 1940, the War Department trialed the T4x for the war effort.
The T4x passed the trial easily, and an order of 20 was made after. These 20 were numbered War Department NW-100-NW-119 and were assigned across Britain, and were finished by 1941. Another order was made, this time for 10 T4x's, were built in 1943 and were numbered NW-120-NW-129. All 35 T4x's survived to BR days, and the War department engines were re-numbered 90100-90129. The entire class survived until 1961, when 90100-90109 were withdrawn. 90110-19114 were withdrawn in 1962, 90115-10119 in 1963, 90120 and NWR 411-414 were withdrawn in 1965, and the last of the class were withdrawn in 1968. Seven survive, being 90100, 410, 90109, and 90114-90117.
