Oh how I love the old-fashioned feeling of a hand-drawn sketch such as this one. But a question if I may: there are the initials 'MM' in the lower-right hand corner; is that your real name or something?

That is. Man. I can't even. This rocks my socks. I used to watch my mom draw stuff just like this. Well, not watch so much as "spy on," and find packed away in her old college stuff. And Tom Sawyer had illustrations in this style. Ohhhhhhhhh there's the nostalgia right square in the brain, ow ow ow

CU, how long have you been drawing? I know time is no way to measure skill and effort, but I was just wondering.

For as long as I can remember.
But it wasn't until about two years ago that I decided to accept art (as my "special talent" as it were)... and to pursue it seriously.
Prior to that though... I took lots of random art classes while growing up. Ceramics, drawing, painting, art history, glassblowing, photography, writing... Both summer camps/programs and public school classes. My skillset is a patchwork of all the interesting little things I learned from all those art classes, stitched together with the effort of practice.
And now that I've accepted that art is really the only thing in my life that I'm any good at... I'm practicing a lot more than I used to (new motivations). Also started art school last fall.
Make the effort to put in the time and the advancement of your skills will be measurable.

Indeed.
Interestingly, I have an ink drawing done by my grandmother (a long time ago), that looks very similar to Booth's work!
So thank you very much for giving me his name, as I wanted to try and search for the artist(s) that had inspired her!

Nice. Very nice. I feel that darker areas could have been added in so as to better balance out the negative space, but this is still a pretty cool piece. I love the detail. Nice work!

I agree that it needs to be balanced more.
In the original by DorΓ©, there was some lovely hatching in the distant background... emphasizing the shadows of the trees and evening out the midtones and darks.
I think it'd help if I picked better materials next time... The pen I was using was too large to replicate his hair-thin lines.
Thank you for the critique! <3

Mitch-el In reply to CosmicUnicorn [2012-03-26 17:49:14 +0000 UTC]
Interesting. Yes, emphasis in those areas would definitely make it stand out more. The way you have it now almost looks like a work-in-progress, although this sort of adds to the appeal of the composition.
Really? The lines looked pretty thin to me in places, but there's nothing wrong with choosing a smaller pen next time if it would be an aid.
You're most welcome! Keep up the good work!

WOW. Words cannot describe the epicness. It reminds me of the work of Topcraft on The Hobbit. Interesting fact:
"The Hobbit was animated by Topcraft, a now-defunct Japanese animation studio whose animation team would go on to re-form as Studio Ghibli alongside Hayao Miyazaki. Topcraft successfully partnered with Rankin/Bass on several other co-productions, including The Last Unicorn. According to Rankin, the visual style of the film took its basic cue from the early illustrations of Arthur Rackham.
While Topcraft produced the animation, the concept artwork was completed in the US under the direction of Arthur Rankin. Principal artists included coordinating animator Toru Hara; supervising animator/character designer Tsuguyuki Kubo; character and effects animators Hidetoshi Kaneko and Kazuko Ito; and background designer Minoru Nishida. The same studio and crew members were also used for The Return of the King."

Is there any chance you could provide options for us to get a print of this, or a high resolution version so we could make our own?
