Very, VERY cool render here!
I like the glass-appearance a lot, as well as the background!
May i ask about the rendertime?
Did you use final-gather ? Caustics, i doubt, as i cant see them...
I am asking, because i have modeled a chesset, too...
Lots of Reflections / Refractions and caustics in the glasspieces, some mia_materials and some reflectionblur going on on the chessboard...
2 arealights, HDR, softshadows...
and even though i already precahced a final gather map as well as a caustic-photonmap, it STILL is at 1 hour 35 minutes rendertime (in 1280x720 ) O_o

yeah, it took a long time to render also... don't remember the rendertime exactly, this piece is kinda old
I used HDR, final-gather...
and the material/shader I used l_glass [link]

Well, i have mine completed, too, but i just stuck with the standard Dielectric material that comes with mentalRay.
